A silent film classic will get live organ accompaniment Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium.
"Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" is a 1927 film directed by German filmmaker F.W. Murnau. It follows a rural farmer bewitched by a glamorous city woman, who convinces him to drown his wife. Unable to commit murder, the farmer follows his fleeing wife to the city, where the couple ultimately rediscovers their love.
The film was acclaimed for pushing the boundaries of the purely visual and auditory medium. Released right at the dawn of the “talkies,” Sunrise was the first feature film released using the Fox Movietone sound-on-film system, utilizing a fully synchronized musical score and sound effects, though it featured no spoken dialogue.
Janet Gaynor won best actress in the first year of the Academy Awards, and "Sunrise" also won a special prize for “Unique and Artistic Production” at the ceremony.
Providing organ accompaniment will be Jay Spencer, house organist at the Canton Palace Theatre. He's accompanied silent films at screenings through northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
The movie starts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $11 and are available online at experienceyourarts.org, by calling 330-259-9651 and at the door the day of the screening.
