MERCY HEALTH HOSPITALS RECOGNIZED: Blue Cross Blue Shield Association has recognized three Mercy Health hospitals in the Mahoning Valley as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth Youngstown, Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth Boardman, and Mercy Health-St. Joseph Warren hospitals were each named Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement.

Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities that show a commitment to delivering high-quality patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community and leading accreditation and quality organizations. There were 507 hospitals nationwide awarded the distinction in a Sept. 2 report.

Facilities designated as Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement demonstrate expertise in total knee and hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions. All designated facilities must maintain national accreditation, and ASCs are also required to have an advanced orthopedic certification.

CANCER WELLNESS CENTER GETS GRANT: Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness organization in Youngstown, received a $7,500 grant from the Arnett Family, Kennedy Family and First Place Community funds held at the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

The dollars will further expand programming at Yellow Brick Place, which offers no-cost wigs and accessories along with educational sessions with Valley experts on proper use and wear.

Yellow Brick Place was founded in 2015 by two cancer survivors, Donne Detweiler and Anna Aey with a vision to support and educate cancer patients and those closest to them by providing individual and group services that nourish and comfort the mind, body and spirit during the fight against cancer.

In addition to resource libraries, services for these families such as healing arts, one-on-one family consultations, children’s programming, support groups and classes on coping and managing life after a cancer diagnosis are free of charge to all throughout the Mahoning Valley.

ST. E’S NAMED HIGH PERFORMER: St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, both part of the Mercy Health Bon Secours hospital system, have been recognized as a High Performing Hospital for 2020-21 by U.S. News & World Report.

The annual Procedures & Conditions ratings, now in their sixth year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care.

Both hospitals received “High Performing” ratings for both their Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure programs.

These ratings are in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes.

For more information about the 2020-21 rankings and ratings, visit the FAQ. The rankings will be published in the “Best Hospitals 2021” guidebook.
