GRIEF RECOVERY GROUPS: Grief Recovery instructional support groups begins its 59th series at 6 p.m. today at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home Care Center, next to the funeral home, 709 N. Main St., Hubbard. Groups are led by Philip Roland and are open to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

The groups will meet each Tuesday throughout the winter, and are not limited to those families served by the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral home.

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS: Mercy Health-Hospice of the Valley is seeking volunteers and will host a training course from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 8 and 15 at Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland.

Pre-registration, fingerprints and background checks are mandatory for those seeking this required training.

“Chronic Pain Self-Management,” 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Feb. 6 through March 12 at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.

“Chronic Pain Self-Management” is an educational program designed to help individuals 60 and older with proven strategies to manage chronic pain. Classes are interactive, and mutual support and success helps build confidence in managing health and maintaining active and fulfilling lives.

“Falls Prevention — A Matter of Balance” is an eight-week structured falls prevention workshop that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels.

During weekly two-hours sessions, participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

SRMC CANCER SUPPORT GROUP: Community members facing the challenges of a cancer journey can gain encouragement and understanding of the disease during a free support group hosted by University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Salem Regional Medical Center.

The group’s next monthly meeting will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in SRMC’s Oncology Conference Room, inside the Cancer and Infusion Center on the hospital’s second floor. Guest speaker Jessica Mertens, a clinical dietitian, will discuss “Eating Well Through Cancer.”

SRMC’s Cancer Support Group is open to anyone coping with a cancer diagnosis, whether receiving care at SRMC or another facility. Sessions are led by SRMC’s licensed oncology social worker, and offer education and emotional support for people with any type of cancer. The group meets one Wednesday evening a month.

DOWNS WINTER PROGRAMS: Down Syndrome Association of the Valley encourages persons with Down syndrome and their families to visit dsav.org to register for winter programming that includes yoga, tennis, swim, cooking, social therapy and toddler time. Membership to DSAV is free.

Another G.A. meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Christ Presbyterian Church, 3425 Hopkins Road, Boardman.

There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats, and free literature. Meetings are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

HEALTHIER AT HOME: Healthier at Home, a free workshop sponsored by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, will provide solid advice for caring for one’s self, preventing illness and injury, and determining when to seek medical care.

Participants will also receive a book, “Your Complete Guide to Symptoms, Solutions & Self Care,” which provides step-by-step instructions for addressing more than 200 common health issues.

CANCER SUPPORT: A free cancer support group hosted by University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Salem Regional Medical Center will help those with cancer to understand the disease and offer support.

The group’s next monthly meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in SRMC’s Oncology Conference Room, inside the Cancer & Infusion Center on the hospital’s second floor. Free wellness chair massages will be provided to attendees courtesy of Community Hospice, and pre-registration is required to reserve a space.

AWARENESS PROGRAM: Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will offer a “Drug and Alcohol Epidemic Awareness” program 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown.

Joyce Alexander, an expert in drug and alcohol therapy treatment from Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic, will talk about the drug and alcohol epidemic in the Youngstown area and how it is affecting all ages, classes, races, creeds and religions. She will also explain ways to get help for or offer support to a family member addicted to drugs or alcohol.

PFLAG TO MEET: Youngstown Area PFLAG will have its monthly support meeting 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown. Youngstown Area PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends and Allies) is a support, education and advocacy group United with LGBT People to move equality forward.

ADDICTION THERAPY AVAILABLE: PsyCare Inc., 2980 Belmont Ave., Liberty, has created a clinical therapy program to treat individuals suffering with substance abuse and drug addiction issues. Family members are also welcome.

Assessments can be scheduled by calling 330-759-2310.

STEPPING OUT DAILY: Stepping Out, provided through a grant from the Mercy Health Foundation, offers daily activities and programs throughout the Mahoning Valley.
