YSU’s 2022-2023 season a mixed bag, but mostly a success

YOUNGSTOWN — From the high of beating Green Bay in the Kress Center to the low of losing four of its final five games, the 2022-23 season was a roller coaster for Youngstown State. But, with an overall record of 19-11 and a conference record of 13-7, it still has to be considered a ...

Trip to Disney jogs the mind of memories

The morning sun still touched the treetops Tuesday as I admired the lake in front of me and recalled the exact same view I saw in the distant past. The lakescape before me was a mirror image from more than 30 years ago. I stood on the dock in 1992 with considerable eagerness to get out there in pursuit of big largemouth bass and experience a day on the water that I shared with readers in a Vindy column that opened with the line, “There’s something goofy about fishing in Disney.” Thirty years ago seemed like yesterday as I admired Bay Lake from Disney’s Wilderness Lodge last ...

NIT still an opportunity for Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN — It wasn’t the ending for which Youngstown State had hoped. Not after the preseason excitement. Not after taking Power 5 program Notre Dame to the wire. And certainly not after months of some of the best basketball in program history, capped by a regular season Horizon ...

Warm start to March great for anglers

Reports from a variety of sources are that March’s lamb-like arrival has made for some excellent late-winter fishing conditions on the lakes near Youngstown and Warren. Crappies and perch are popular throughout the season and highly prized this time of the year by those who hope to ...

An angler’s goals for the 2023 season

As I prepare for the beginning of the 2023 fishing season, I have been thinking about past successes on our Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania lakes. Anglers look forward to those glorious spring days when the water is calm, the sun is warm and the redwing blackbirds are trilling in the wetlands surrounding our favorite lakes. Those days are coming soon, but in the meantime, we plot and plan for success early and often. So what constitutes a successful fishing trip? One cool thing about fishing is your idea of success may be completely different than mine. I might rejoice ...

Athletic fallout from the EP train derailment

Just over two weeks ago, a train derailment in East Palestine thoroughly devastated a local community and its surrounding areas. Since that time, the aftermath has affected different aspects of life for many community members around the area and this past week it leaked over into the athletic landscape of the OHSAA girls basketball playoffs. On Thursday, the 9th-seeded East Palestine Bulldogs were set to host the 15th-seeded Bristol Panthers in the first round of the postseason tournament, a sectional semifinal matchup. But, after a discussion between the two schools and the OHSAA, ...
