Capitol riot is where the violence began

DEAR EDITOR: American voters have to look back to Jan. 6, 2021, to who started all this hate, anger, chaos, attempted assassinations and now an assassination with Trump’s big, ugly lie, “voter fraud.” The Bush / Trump Republican Supreme Court ruled there was no voter fraud, three times. “You don’t settle your representatives with guns, you do it with your vote!” Trump and his multibillionaires are an accident looking for a place to happen. American voters, the threats to your freedoms and liberties are on your 2026 and 2028 ballots. DAVID P. GAIBIS ...

East Palestine falling between the tracks

DEAR EDITOR: I have always strongly encouraged my children and others not to live their lives filled with cynicism. I have also advocated for the place of government, specifically as to its constitutional role. Our cynicism usually finds government at its epicenter. East Palestine, its residents, businesses and communities that surround it have been dramatically impacted by the Norfolk Southern train derailment. Our health, psychological, emotional and economic damages have been immeasurable! Many continue to live with questions, frustrations, concerns and stress pressing into the ...

Trump, congressmen, voters un-American

DEAR EDITOR: On Thursday, Sept. 18, in the wake of the Jimmy Kimmel issue, Donald Trump made the following statement while being interviewed on Air Force One: “And if [broadcast outlets] are 97% against — they give me only bad publicity or press — I mean, they are getting a license. When you go back and take a look, all they do is hit Trump. They’re licensed. They’re not allowed to do that.” The next day, I submitted a question via their websites to our two U.S. Senators from Ohio and the U.S. Representative from the 6th District. I reproduced the above statement, and ...

Trump engaged in war games in U.S.

DEAR EDITOR: I had been worrying that 47’s specious deployments of federalized National Guards as well as masked secret police of ICE were actually war game practice for midterm and 2028 elections. When he suggested to a mandatory gathering of all military flag officers during his Quantico presentation that they should use U.S. cities as practice grounds for troop training, I felt he confirmed my suspicion. His purpose in sending uniformed people with military weapons to Los Angeles, D.C., Chicago and Portland against the objections of their mayors and state governors is clear. ...

Why call DOD the Department of War?

DEAR EDITOR: As one who served at the Pentagon during 9/11, I was proud to serve under the auspices that I was a defender of our homeland rather than being thought of as one who wages war. By issuing an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War, it portrays us as a warmongering nation rather than one that is peace loving. We need to be a role model among nations as one that advocates peace rather than one that stands ready to wage war. Our President should emulate that which President Kennedy said in a speech at American University in 1963, ...

Sound off!

It’s great to note the healthy growth of student enrollment at YSU. The good things happening at Youngstown State seem to have started around the time President Bill Johnson took the helm. Looks like he’s making good on his promise to make our university the envy of higher education in the great state of Ohio. Thanks to the Board of Trustees for its wisdom in bringing this determined leader to YSU. — Poland Bill Johnson’s guest column was the height of hypocrisy, while his president and Republican Party threaten American universities with lawsuits and funding cuts because ...
