Preparing for next year’s election, some state legislators in the Mahoning Valley have a decent amount of cash in their campaign funds. State Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan, D-Youngstown, cannot run for re-election next year because of the term limits law. Her state fund had $21,454.36 in it as of June 30. Lepore-Hagan said she is considering a state Senate bid next year and her husband, Robert, may be interested in the state House seat. Decisions will be made by the end of September, she said. The Ohio Redistricting Commission, which will redraw the 99 Ohio House and 33 state Senate districts, will meet today for the first time. The commission also gets a crack at redrawing the congressional districts if the state Legislature is unable to come up with a map that satisfies enough Democrats. Bad vibe from ‘secret’ meeting on COVID-19 funds

A big deal was made during a June 8 news conference about a June 30 regional summit to discuss the best ways to spend the incredibly large amount of money the area is getting from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, or ARP. It turned out the meeting was closed to everyone but invited guests, which included big-wigs from business and charitable foundations. Why bother having a news conference to tout a private meeting? One sure sign that the COVID-19 pandemic is practically behind us is the return of statewide politicians to the Mahoning Valley.
