YOUNGSTOWN -- Ty L. Murphy, 36, of the 2200 block of Volney Road, was arraigned Tuesday on felony abduction and strangulation in an Oct. 3 incident at his South Side home.

A Youngstown police report states that a woman, 27, of the Cleveland area alleges Murphy choked the woman twice and swung her around "like a rag doll." Murphy was arrested Tuesday on warrants related to the case and was released on bond from the Mahoning County jail later Tuesday.

If convicted of the two felonies, Murphy could get several years in prison. He returns to court for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Oct. 27.

Police were called to Murphy's home for a fight. The woman said she often visits Murphy's home but she does not live there. She said Murphy has been violent with her in the past.

But on Oct. 2 or 3, the woman discovered Murphy was "texting girls," which led to an argument. He took her phone and saw a message in which the woman called her mother to give her a ride home, a police report states.

She said he began choking her but eventually let go of her and she called her mother. After the call, Murphy started choking her again and swung her around "like a rag doll," the report states. After that, he choked her a third time, the woman alleged.

It went on for about a half hour, and she lost consciousness, she said.

Officers spoke with a man who lives at the address, which is described as a "safe haven for people on hard times, but it does not have a business name."

The man said he heard loud noises coming from Murphy's room that night and it sounded like fighting.

The victim had about four bruises, two on each arm. She also reported that her head and neck hurt from the assault, police said.

Murphy was initially charged with misdemeanor assault and was arraigned on that charge in Youngstown Municipal Court Oct. 4.

The felony abduction and strangulation charge were added Oct. 11, according to Youngstown Municipal Court records.
