Sandor Tollas Jr. 1957-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Sandor “Sonny” Tollas Jr., 66, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Hospice House.

He was born April 29, 1957, in Youngstown, a son of Sandor and Mary Novak Tollas. Sandor graduated from Chaney High School in 1975 and from YSU in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

He worked at the Goodyear Atomic / Martin Marietta plant in Piketon.

He was a member of the William Penn Association Branch 28, serving as vice president, the Youngstown American Hungarian Federation, volunteered at HAP bingo, was a member of the former St. Stephen of Hungary Church Holy Name and Youngstown Hungarian Club.

He found pleasure in watching any pro or state Ohio sports teams, especially the Browns, visiting casinos, baking holiday cookies, puttering in his garden, and was always willing to help others.

Sandor was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 72, where he became the first Eagle recipient of that troop. He then became a member of the Order of the Arrow, receiving its highest vigil honor at Camp Stambaugh.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his siblings, Mary Foor of Lorain, Stephen (Cindy) Tollas of Hicksville and John (Mamie) Tollas of Columbiana; nephews, John Tollas Jr., Scott Tollas and Brett (Alexa) Tollas; nieces, Nicole (Mike) Moon, Lyndsey (Adam) Miller and Chrissy Kobasic, who was also his goddaughter; and three great-nephews and three great-nieces. He also leaves behind his goddaughter, Lizzy Hadzinksy; Scouting friend, Dale Beckman; and cousin, Kathy Novak.

Friends will be received noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown, with a prayer service at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial celebration of life in the church social hall.
