YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State football team will play Ohio State in 2023, the program announced Monday.

The game will take place Sept. 9. Financial details were not immediately available.

The Buckeyes originally were supposed to play San Jose State that weekend, but the programs mutually agreed to call the game off, according to Ohio State Athletics.

The Penguins and Buckeyes last squared off in 2007 and 2008, when now YSU president Jim Tressel was the head coach at OSU.

Ohio State won both contests, 38-6 in 2007 and 43-0 in 2008. The Buckeyes last played an FCS team in 2013, a 76-0 romp over Florida A&M.

Tressel guided YSU to four FCS (then called Division I-AA) championships before leaving to take the job in Columbus in 2001. He won the 2002 BCS national championship. In 2014, he took over as the president of Youngstown State.

The game also will serve as a homecoming of sorts as the Penguins feature several players from the Columbus area.

One of those players, starting quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw, a native of Pickerington (about 25 minutes from downtown Columbus), expressed his excitement on Twitter after the announcement was made, writing, “In the city!!!”

YSU begins its 2022 season Saturday, Sept. 3 at home against Duquesne.
