Seasons close fast for YSU

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s basketball teams have three weeks remaining in the pandemic-plagued 2020-21 Horizon League season to position themselves for the league tournaments.

The men visit Robert Morris today (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m.), while the women are at home against Purdue Fort Wayne. Both men’s games will be broadcast on WKBN 570-AM and on ESPN-plus. The women’s games are 2 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Saturday, both on WNIO 1390-AM and ESPN-plus.

Due to the unbalanced league schedule because of COVID-19, the league is using a formula that considers league winning percentage, strength of schedule, road wins vs. home wins and number of league games played to determine tournament seeding.

YSU (8-10, 4-10 Horizon) has lost six of its last seven games on the men’s side, but the last four have been by seven points or less, including two last week at home against Detroit Mercy.

Robert Morris, which has lost six straight, is 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the Horizon League. AJ Bramah leads the league in scoring at 21.5 points per game and is third in the league in rebounding (9.7 rpg) and fifth in the league in shooting percentage (.513).

Prior to the Colonials joining the Horizon League this season, the schools played 20 times with RMU holding an 11-9 advantage.

After this weekend, the Penguins are at home for back-to-backs with Purdue Fort Wayne (5-9 Horizon) and IUPUI (3-7 Horizon).

Cleveland State (12-2) and Wright State (11-3) lead the league. YSU posted a road victory over the Raiders in early January and the Penguins’ results also include a seven-point road loss against the Vikings.

The Penguins have added a non-league home game Monday against Rochester University of Michigan. The NAIA school is a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Game time is 1 p.m.

The YSU women (6-4 overall, 6-4 Horizon) follow this weekend’s games against Fort Wayne (0-16, 0-14) with a trip to IUPUI (9-4, 7-3) and a visit from Cleveland State (5-7, 5-7).

The Penguins have won six of their last seven games after starting the twice-delayed season with three straight losses.
