YSU tandem to play tonight

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s basketball teams have a better idea of how their postseason schedule might look as they continue the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season with games today and Saturday.

The men continue their homestand against Detroit Mercy with both games starting at 5 p.m. at the Beeghly Center. They can be heard on WKBN 570-AM and seen on ESPN3.

The women’s team is out to extend a five-game winning streak at Horizon League newcomer Robert Morris University. Tonight’s game starts at 7 and Saturday’s game time is 5 p.m. Both games are available on WNIO 1390-AM and on ESPN-plus.

The Horizon League this week announced how its postseason is scheduled, culminating in the final four for both men and women playing March 8-9 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.

All eligible teams can compete, with the top four teams in the regular season earning a bye to the quarterfinals and a home game on March 2. The winners that day will advance to the semifinals in Indianapolis.

First-round games for men’s teams placing fifth through 12th are scheduled Feb. 25 at campus sites with the better-seeded team hosting. The women’s first round will be for teams seeded sixth through 11th since Detroit Mercy has ended its season. The fifth-place women’s team will earn a bye into the quarterfinals.

Each round of play will re-bracket with the best remaining seed facing the lowest remaining seed.

The YSU men, 8-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play, are coming off a historic win last Saturday over Illinois-Chicago. In the Penguins’ 85-77 victory, senior Naz Bohannon became YSU’s Division I all-time rebounding leader and fellow senior Garrett Covington became the 40th player in program history to score 1,000 points in a career.

Covington scored 12 against UIC to get to 1,006 for his career and to become the school’s third player this season to reach 1,000. Darius Quisenberry and Bohannon both hit the milestone earlier this season.

Bohannon’s nine rebounds puts him at 904 for his career, which is fourth all-time at YSU, including when it was a Division II program.

The Penguins’ win on Saturday helped them earn a split for the weekend after UIC won 67-66 on Friday night at the buzzer.

Detroit Mercy (4-8, 3-5 Horizon) is coming off a split against Oakland.

Including this weekend, YSU’s four opponents over the final eight games have a combined league record of 12-23. Cleveland State (10-2) and Wright State (9-3) continue to lead the way in the Horizon.

The YSU women (5-3, 5-3 Horizon) also have a favorable schedule down the stretch. After the short trip to Robert Morris (2-8, 2-8), the Penguins play host to Purdue Fort Wayne (0-14, 0-12), visit IUPUI (8-3, 6-2) and play at home against Cleveland State (3-7, 3-7).

YSU’s current five-game winning streak includes the last four in a row against UIC (2-9, 1-7), which replaced Detroit Mercy at Beeghly Center last weekend after the Titans pulled out. YSU had swept UIC the previous weekend in Chicago.

Freshman Nneka Obiazor continues to lead the Penguins, averaging 14.3 points per game and 8.9 rebounds. She is backed by three seniors, Mary Dunn (12.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg), Chelsea Olseon (12.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 4.25 assists per game) and McKenah Peters (10.5 ppg, 44.4 percent shooting on 20 made 3-pointers).
