CSU ends YSU women’s season

CLEVELAND — The Youngstown State women’s basketball team had its season come to a close in the opening round of the 2020 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship on Tuesday with an 84-48 loss at Cleveland State.

The Penguins, who were the seventh seed in the tournament, finish the 2019-20 season with a 13-17 record. The sixth-seeded Vikings improved to 20-10 and advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Emma VanZanten scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and Chelsea Olson scored all 12 of her points from the 3-point line to lead Youngstown State.

Cleveland State’s seniors set the tone as Mariah Miller scored a game-best 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting, and Jade Ely had 12 points and nine rebounds. Mariah White added 17 points, and she had five steals in the first quarter as the Vikings jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back.
