Injury-riddled Penguins in final 2 games

YOUNGSTOWN — Seventh or eighth place, that’s where the Youngstown State women’s basketball team will end up in the Horizon League final standings. YSU (13-14, 6-10 Horizon) plays at Milwaukee tonight at 8.

It’s been a rough road for the Penguins, who have seen Lexi Wagner, Amara Chikwe, Mary Dunn, Emma VanZanten, McKenah Peters and Taylor Petit all succumb to injuries. Peters, Petit and VanZanten are back as YSU has persevered heading into the last two games of the regular season.

The Horizon League tournament starts next week and YSU will play Tuesday at either Milwaukee or Cleveland State.

“We’re going to have a good experience here in the last weekend,” YSU coach John Barnes said. “A lot of young players playing. This experience is going to be good for them, wherever we are playing the tournament. They’re going to get a lot of great experience and we’re going to give it everything we have.”

YSU also plays at Green Bay Saturday at 3 p.m.

Milwaukee (12-15, 9-7) has won six of its last eight games, while Green Bay (16-12, 11-5) has won eight of its last 10.

“This is going to be a heckuva challenging weekend for us,” Barnes said.

It’ll be a different time around for Milwaukee as the Penguins are a much healthier team than when they played against the Panthers in a 74-62 loss Jan. 26 in Youngstown. For one, Peters is back for YSU. She averages 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in league play.

Last time out, the Penguins were coming off a double-overtime loss to Green Bay on Jan. 24 in Youngstown.

“We’ll have a lot more energy,” Barnes said. “It’s the first game on the two-game swing. We’ll have McKenah back. It’s a whole different game.”

Freshman guard Quinece Hatcher and assistant coach John Nicolais are out sick with strep throat.

YSU has won two of its last three heading into the final two games of the regular season.

“We are doing whatever we can to survive,” Barnes said.
