YOUNGSTOWN — For his record-setting performance against Missouri State, Youngstown State quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw earned both Missouri Valley Football Conference and Stats Perform honors.

The redshirt freshman ran for 195 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, setting the YSU mark for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game. His performance helped lead the Penguins to a 41-33 upset of the then-No. 15 Bears.

Crenshaw also threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns that helped YSU take a 17-3 lead into the intermission.

For those efforts, Crenshaw was named the MVFC Newcomer of the Week, as well as the Stats Perform FCS Freshman of the Week.

Others to receive MVFC honors this week were: Southern Illinois quarterback Nic Baker (Offensive Player of the Week), Indiana State defensive end Inoke Moala (Defensive Player of the Week) and Southern Illinois punter Jack Colquhoun (Special Teams Player of the Week).

Other tidbits from YSU’s first league win of the season:

• With the victory, YSU now leads the all-time series against Missouri State 16-6.

• Colt McFadden’s 45-yard field goal during the second quarter was a career-long. The Poland Seminary alumnus is 5-for-6 this season.

• Second-string tailback Christian Turner is still rehabbing from an injury he suffered earlier in the year. Head coach Doug Phillips said the tailback was out of a walking boot this week, and that he believes Turner, who also didn’t play at Northern Iowa, will return soon.

Phillips added that Turner is unlikely to practice this week, given YSU is idle, but that “I’m hoping that we will get him back going into the Indiana State game, because he’s a huge piece of our offense.”

• The 377 rushing yards YSU tallied as a team were the most the Penguins have racked up this season, and the 18th-most all time. The top mark also came against Missouri State, when the Penguins ran for 572 yards in 2016’s 65-20 win.

• YSU also set a new season-high in total yardage with 476. Previously, that mark was the 463 yards the Penguins racked up against Incarnate Word.

• YSU’s defense forced four turnovers, a season-high for the team. The unit also set a season-high sack total with four. Previously, that mark was three, which came at Northern Iowa.

• Crenshaw’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Sam St. Surin early in the first quarter was the longest touchdown throw of the year for the quarterback. His longest pass remains the 45-yard catch and run he completed to Jaleel McLaughlin during Week 1’s 41-38 overtime win against Incarnate Word.

• Saturday marked the second time this season Crenshaw and McLaughlin each eclipsed 100 yards rushing in a single game, as Crenshaw amassed 195 yards and McLaughlin added 156. Previously, the duo did that against Western Illinois, when Crenshaw ran for 134 yards and McLaughlin had 136.

• Youngstown State’s 24 points in the second half were the most the Penguins have amassed after intermission this season. Additionally, their 21 points in the fourth quarter tied for the most YSU has scored in a quarter this season. YSU also accomplished that feat in the second quarter against Western Illinois.

• On the other hand, the 23 points Youngstown State gave up to MSU in the fourth were the most the Penguins have allowed in any quarter this season.

• YSU’s win over Missouri State wasn’t the only upset Saturday. In all, nine FCS ranked teams fell, though six were in matchups with other Top 25 teams. They were: South Dakota State, James Madison, UC Davis, Delaware, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls.

The Penguins are off this week before returning to action Oct. 23 at Indiana State.
