Jack Loew to host ‘We’re Back!’ boxing card

YOUNGSTOWN – It has been 19 months since Jack Loew and the South Side Boxing Club have hosted a fight show.

Their upcoming 12-bout card, appropriately titled “We’re Back!” returns July 30 to the Metroplex Banquet Center with SSBC’s Tony Scandy going up against Jason Cosa in a master’s division 201-plus pound main event pairing.

“I just want to keep boxing going and alive in the area,” Loew said from his Erie Street gym. “For the last 31 years I’ve been the focal point of boxing in the area and truly enjoy that role. I have been fortunate because during that time there has always been a full gym.

“Right now, we have nine registered fighters, 17 who regularly work out and we are comfortable with those numbers. Where we are located on Erie Street, this smelly, old gym and facility has a history. It is where we won all of our titles so this is a very special place and remains dear to my heart.”

Loew will showcase four of his fighters with hopefuls from Akron, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit (MI), Harrisburg (PA), New York, Ambridge (PA) and New Castle (PA) also represented. Other local gyms set to participate include Tom Cordell’s Downton Boxing Club with two fighters and former Loew protege, Darnell Boone, who is training fighters at his newly established Deezol Boxing Academy on the city’s East side, also has a fighter represented. The night begins with the only female pairing as Cleveland’s Tomasia Pierce goes to the canvas against Lateesha Mohl of Harrisburg in a 130 pound scrap. In addition to the main event between Scandy and Cosa – who is former lightweight world champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini’s nephew – Loew will also present Isaac Johnson, who meets Deezol Boxing Academy’s Aidan St. Claire in a 165 pairing, Devon Tate as he goes up against Tyler Martin of Columbus in a 165 bout and Jackson Behun, who will take on Nick Rezek of Cleveland, also at 165 pounds.

“Jackson just turned 18 years-old, recently enlisted in the United States Navy and will be leaving for military service on December 1,” Loew added. “I have been with him since he was 12 years-old and this young man has a wealth of talent.

“I hate to see him leave because he has been a mainstay in my gym for the past six years. This is a new venture in his life, something that he wants to do and I am behind him 100 percent.”

In the seventh bout of the evening, Akron’s Tyshawn Denson, the No. 3 ranked amateur in the country at 132 pounds, will host Montana Perez of Harrisburg, the country’s No. 6 ranked fighter in the same weight class.

“It is not very often that you can get the No. 3 and No. 6 ranked fighters in their respective weight class in the same ring yet alone on the same card. We’re very fortunate to have been able to secure this match-up,” Loew stated. “Both are excellent fighters and hit hard. Either one is capable of winning this fight.”

General admission tickets are $20 each, ringside seats $50 with a table of eight available for $400.

“We have already sold 45 corporate tables and three-quarters of our general admission tickets so hopefully this is the kick-start that area boxing needs after the COVID-19 pandemic,” Loew noted.

First bout gets underway at 7 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. and further information can be obtained by calling 330-501-5713.
