Wednesday highlights

BASEBALL

Seventh-seeded Chardon scored six consecutive runs to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead and held on to defeat 12th-seeded Poland 7-5 in a Division II sectional bracket final. The Bulldogs scored the game’s final three runs in the fifth to pull close.

Fifth-seeded Niles got a walk-off win over eighth-seeded Streetsboro, winning 7-6 in a Division II sectional bracket final. The Rockets scored three times in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 6 off Red Dragons’ starter Kolton Christopher (4 earned runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts) before Sam Perrone relieved to get the final out. Niles then scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Perrone the pitching win.

Third-seeded Garfield eliminated eighth-seeded Ursuline, winning a Division III sectional bracket final, 5-3. It proved to be a pitching duel between the Fighting Irish and G-Men, as the teams combined for nine hits and 15 strikeouts. No individual had more than one hit or one RBI. Kaiden Spade struck out nine to get the win, giving up one earned run as Garfield made five errors. Ursuline starter Jonah Kirchner had four strikeouts and reliever Brady Shannon added two.

Jake Pappagallo struck out 12 and tossed a two-hitter as Western Reserve defeated Wellsville 9-0 in a Division IV sectional bracket final. Pappagallo also had two hits. Seth Phillips led with three hits and Jacob Buchmann also had two hits.

David Cunningham threw nine strikeouts in a 3-1 loss for West Branch to Canton South in its sectional bracket final matchup. The Warriors end their season at 16-11.

Logan Boyd recorded three hits for Cardinal Mooney as it beat Columbiana 8-3 in their sectional bracket final matchup. Two of Boyd’s hits were doubles and he finished with two RBIs.

Carter Blakeman had three hits for Crestview and four of his teammates recorded two hits each as the Crestview bats powered past Pymatuning Valley 13-3 in a sectional bracket final. Joey Hawkins, Connor Hughes, Matthew Lindsay and Matthew Strank all recorded multiple hits.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Canfield advanced to the regional semifinals Wednesday after a big 18-7 win over Kent Roosevelt. Emily Wilson recorded six goals for the Cardinals and both Sarah Grohovsky and Ally Wilson each had three goals. Up next for Canfield is Hathaway Brown on Saturday at noon at home.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Ted Anzevino of Boardman took the gold in the pole vault and will be representing his team at the regional stage after the first day of Division I district competition at Fitch. Harrison Spalding and Christian Swarm, both of Fitch placed in the top three. Jameire Robinson placed third in the discus and sealed his spot in the next stage. The remaining events will be held Friday at Austintown Fitch High School.

After day one at the Division III district at Springfield, McDonald is sending a big group of boys to regionals and leads the team scoring as well. Ryan Henry took the top spot in the discus. Coleson Kertesz of Springfield and Dante Mediati of McDonald took the next two spots. The Blue Devils are also sending their 4×800 relay team along with Lowellville, Mineral Ridge and Crestview. Collin Schick of Columbiana finished second in the long jump, with Anthony Calderone of Sebring and Clayton Nezbeth of Springfield rounding out the top four. The finals for the rest of the events will be held Friday at Springfield Local High School.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Kylee Madison of Fitch and Annia Robles of Boardman have punched their respective tickets to the regionals after placing third and fourth respectively in the shot put at the Division I district held at Austintown Fitch High School. Courtney Clark of Howland won the event. Madison Sisler and Mia Barrish, both of Howland, are also advancing after placing first and third in the high jump. Finals for the remaining events are set for Friday.

With day one of the Division III district at Springfield in the books, multiple area teams and individuals have clinched their spot in the regionals. McDonald, Mineral Ridge and Lowellville each will be sending its girls 4×800 relay team to regionals at Massillon Perry High School. Emma Rich and Iyonna Pierce, both of Mineral Ridge took the top two spots in the shot put with Molly Gibson of Leetonia rounding out the top three. Morgan Dunlap of Columbiana took the second spot in the high jump and Graciella Ebert of Springfield took the third spot. The remainder of the events will be held on Friday.

Wednesday highlights

BASEBALL

Landon Biedelschies struck out nine to keep Canfield undefeated with a 4-2 victory over Howland on Wednesday.

Salem senior Lane Rhodes threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in a senior night victory over West Branch. Sophomore Gavin Wilms hit a double in the first inning to score all three bases, then himself, after an error from the West Branch fielder. That was all Salem needed to score to get the win.

Alex Mayorga hit a walkoff single for Western Reserve to push them past Lowellville Wednesday. Mayorga was the winning pitcher, striking out five.

SOFTBALL

Fitch’s Maddy Taylor drilled two triples to lead the Falcons to a 9-3 victory over GlenOak in a Division I sectional bracket final. Lydia Spalding struck out 10 and allowed two hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Falcons advance to the district tournament next week.

Mathews picked up its 18th run-rule victory of the season in a sectional victory over Southern Local. Emma Gates threw 14 strikeouts and hita home run. Chloe Sweitzer had four hits and Kaylen McCollum tacked on three. The Mustangs move to 22-4 on the season. They play Badger in the district semifinals on Monday.

Mineral Ridge dropped its sectional contest to East Canton in a 6-0 loss. Morgan Sigley struck out three in the loss. The season isn’t over just yet for the Rams as they host Sebring in a doubleheader today.

Sebring was eliminated from the tournament as Bristol rode a 14 strikeout performance from Jaylyn Mullenax to a sectional bracket final victory.
