Ursuline tennis earns top seeds

Ursuline players grabbed three of the eight seeded positions in next week’s Division II boys tennis sectional tournament. The Irish grabbed the top seed in doubles and the second seed in both singles and doubles.

The duo of Gavin Blacksher and Josh Khavari is No. 1 in doubles and the pairing of Glenn Christopher and Dylan Khavari is second. Chris Simon earned the No. 2 seed in singles.

The tournament begins May 12 at 8:30 a.m. with the opening rounds. Singles matches are held at Boardman and doubles matches at Struthers. Quarterfinals are scheduled May 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Boardman with the semifinals and finals at 9 a.m. on May 15 at Boardman.

The No. 1 seed in singles is Ryan Carnahan of Lakeview. Poland has both No. 3 seeds, Carmen D’Alesio in singles and Jack Brant and Jim Scotford in doubles. Cardinal Mooney players are seeded fourth in both competitions, Erik Vargo in singles and the duo of Antonio D’Alesio and Michael Pelini in doubles.

The only Division I player from the Mahoning Valley to be seeded is Harding’s Anthony Payiavlas who is the third seed in the sectional at Solon Community Park.

The Raiders are joined by Howland at that event, which will be held Monday (early rounds), Tuesday (quarterfinals) and May 13 (semifinals and finals).

Tennis players from Fitch, Boardman and Canfield compete at Jackson Park in Canton. Dates for play there are Tuesday (early rounds), May 13 (quarterfinals) and May 15 (semifinals and finals).

In both divisions, the top four singles players and doubles teams qualify for the district tournament scheduled May 20-22 at Springside Racquet Club in Akron.
