Thursday highlights

BASEBALL

≤ Austintown Fitch’s Joe Roth didn’t allow an earned run in 6 2/3 innings in leading the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over Massillon Jackson in a Division I Sectional bracket final. Roth yielded just four hits while striking out seven. Derek Franken was 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead the offense. Fitch plays Massillon Washington in a district semifinal on Tuesday.

≤ Mathews’ Alex Nicholson stuck out eight and didn’t allow a run to lead the Mustangs to a 4-0 victory over Bristol in a Diviision IV Sectional bracket final. Alex Nicholson powered the offense with two hits, including a double.

≤ Cam Hollobaugh pitched a one-hitter, tripled and drove in two runs as Kennedy beat Lowellville 10-0 in a Division IV sectional bracket final. Caleb Hadley tripled and had three hits and Gavin Shrum added a single, double and two RBIs.

TRACK & FIELD

≤ David McKelver of West Branch and Elizabeth Shontz of Salem were both event winners Thursday, the first day of the Division II district at Salem. McKelver won the long jump with Jax Booth of Salem in second. Carson Stockman of Salem was third in the discus.

Shontz was followed by teammate Kyla Jamison and Annie Lumsden of South Range was third. Claire Brunner of West Branch was third in the high jump. The top four finishers in each event advance to next week’s regional.

Both of Poland’s 4×800 relay teams qualified for regional with the boys finishing second and the girls fourth. Salem’s girls 4×800 relay team placed third.

≤ The Crestview girls track team already has qualified two individuals and a relay team to the Division II Lexington Regional after the first day of district competition at Bedford. The meet includes only girls teams from schools whose boys teams are not Division II or from girls-only schools.

Bailey Wonner won the high jump comeptition for the Rebels, Krista Perry was fourth in the shot put and the Crestvew 4×800 relay team of Grace Auer, Emily Downey, Karagin Miller and Anna Marr finished third. The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional.

≤ Hubbard’s Andrew Frank won the boys long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 5 inches in the Division II district meet at Lakeview. The top four finishers in each event qualify to the regional at Fitch. Girard’s Dom Malito was runner-up with a 21-1 3/4.

Girard’s Mia Malito led an area sweep in the girls high jump with an effort of 5 feet in the Division II district meet at Lakeview. Lakeview’s Isabella Shuster (4-8) and Garfield’s Faith Mills (4-6) and Katelyn Fogleman (4-6) also advanced to regionals.

TENNIS

≤ AKRON — The Mahoning Valley’s two entrants in the Division I boys tennis district tournament both were eliminated in action on Thursday.

Harding junior Anthony Payiavlas won his first singles match, 6-1, 6-1 over Blake Hood of Alliance, then was beaten by Nate Day of Cleveland St. Ignatius, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Day finished first in the sectional at Elyria.

The Canfield doubles team of Jaden Jaffer and Jimmy DeLisio, who had qualified for the district despite being unseeded in the sectional, were beaten 6-3, 6-2 by the St. Ignatius duo of Maki Andrich and Michael Nock.

The first two rounds of the Division II district are scheduled today with semifinal, final and consolation matches in both divisions set for Saturday.

Thursday highlights

SOFTBALL

Bella Kennedy spun a six-inning one-hitter and singled twice, doubled and knocked in a pair of runs in Canfield’s 10-0 win over Salem. The second-seeded Cardinals (15-6), who also got two hits and three RBIs from Lauren Fitzgerald, will play seventh-seeded Hubbard in a district semifinal Tuesday at Hubbard.

Emily Denney and Camryn Lattanzio each singled twice, doubled and drove in four runs top back Katie McDonald’s two-hit pitching in Poland’s 13-0, five-inning win over Jefferson in a Division II sectional bracket final.

Ninth-seeded Rootstown struck out 11 Columbiana batters to upset the fourth-seeded Cippers, 3-1, in a Division III Sectional bracket final on Thursday. Tori Long struck out 14 for Columbiana.

Ursuline’s Paige Ogden tossed a no-hitter as the Irish cruised past Grand Valley, 10-0, in five innings in a Division III bracket final on Thursday. Ogden struck out 12 and walked one for Ursuline, which plays Tuesday in a distrcit semifinal at South Range High School.

Hubbard’s Isabella O’Brien struck out 17, and Gillian Ryser pounded out four hits to lift the Eagles over Southeast, 10-4, in a Dvision II sectional bracket final. The Eagles now host a district semifinal.

Jordan Anderson struck out 17 in a four-hit, 2-0 shutout of Perryin a Division II sectional bracket final. The Warriors (20-6) play at 4:30 on Tuesday in a district semifinal at Jefferson High School.

South Range’s Bree Kohler struck out 10 in a 13-0 one-hit shutout of Springfield in a Division III sectional bracket final. The Raiders at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday in a district semifinal at LaBrae High School.

BASEBALL

Niles’ Anthony Fisher had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs in the Red Dragons’ 13-3, five-inning victory over Poland.

Brady Shannon of Ursuline tossed scoreless innings, striking out seven, to help the Irish beat Warren G. Harding, 6-2.

South Range’s Trey Pancake drove in five runs and was a home run shy of the cycle in the Raiders’ 12-0, five-inning victory over Girard.

Thursday highlights

BASEBALL

South Range’s Brandon Mikos tossed a no-hitter, striking out 12 in a 18-0, five-inning victory over Girard. Mikos was one walk away from a perfect game.

Liberty pitcher Dwight Parker struck out 11 in his third 1-0 win this season, this time against Newton Falls at Eastwood Field. Parker now has 94 Ks in 54 innings.

David Cunningham improved to 8-1 on the mound, as he scattered two hits and struck out six in West Branch’s 11-0 win over Carrollton. He also singled and doubled and got offensive support from Brock Hillyer (two singles, a double and four RBIs) as the Warriors improved to 14-7.

Howland’s Braden Gebhardt tossed a two-hitter, striking out seven in a 13-1 five-inning rout of Columbiana.

SOFTBALL

Ursuline moved to 18-0 on the season Thursday after a six-inning victory over Marlington. Liza Barbato, Julia Nutter and Alyssa Sheely each recorded three hits in the win.

Paige Ogden had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
