Busy week ahead in spring postseason

One of the busiest weeks in the high school sports season begins today as area student-athletes continue — or begin — their quests for postseason success.

Baseball and track & field athletes get started this week. Baseball sectional tournaments are scheduled Monday and Wednesday for Division II and III schools and Tuesday and Thursday for those in Division I and IV.

Track & field district tournaments are scheduled Wednesday and Friday for Divisions I and III and Thursday and Saturday for Division II.

In Division I area athletes will compete at Fitch, while D-III schools will be at Springfield and Cuyahoga Heights. In Division II, districts are being held at Salem and Lakeview, with some area girls teams competing at Bedford.

Softball teams will play their district tournament games this week. The games this week will reduce the number of schools still playing in each division from 64 across the state down to 16.

Divisions I and IV play today and Wednesday, with Divisions II and III slated Tuesday and Thursday.

Today’s D-I matchups at Fitch include Fitch vs. Chardon and Boardman vs. North Canton Hoover.

In Division IV today, Mathews faces Badger and Brookfield meets Lisbon at Candlelight Knolls in Bazetta Township, and McDonald plays Bristol and Western Reserve goes against East Canton at Jackson-Milton.

Tuesday’s Division II lineup has games at Hubbard (Girard vs. Marlington and Canfield vs. Hubbard) and at Jefferson (West Branch vs. Aurora and Poland vs. Mogadore Field).

In Division III it will be South Range vs. Kirtland and Champion vs. Gilmour Academy at LaBrae, and Ursuline vs. Burton Berkshire and Newton Falls vs. Rootstown at Youngstown State.

In boys tennis, five singles players and five doubles teams from the area will play in district competition later this week, all trying to earn a berth in the state tournament the following week.

Early-round action at Springside Racquet Club in Akron is on Thursday for Division I and Friday for Division II. Semifinals and finals are scheduled Saturday morning.
