Area athletes qualify for state in Division II

Girard’s Dominic Malito and Mia Malito punched their tickets on Thursday to the state track meet by placing in the top four in Divsion II regional meet at Fitch.

Dominic was fourth in the long jump and Mia was third in the high jump.

Two Salem girls shot putters are joining them, as Elizabeth Shontz placed second and Kyla Jamison was third.

Ryan Stoller of Garfield and Ursuline’s Clancy Chrystal qualified for Saturday’s finals in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles.

Sieasia Triplett of Girard qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes and Danaysha Mauzy of Lakeview and Kennedy Berger of West Branch both qualified in the 100, while Mia Musolino of Poland also qualified in the 200.

Two area 4×200 teams will advance to Saturday’s finals as the West Branch girls’ team, with three freshmen, finished in the top eight as well as the Salem boys’ team.

Freshmen Lauren Gossett, Sophia Gregory and Berger, and junior Anna Lippiatt comprise the Warriors’ 4×200 team.

West Branch’s girls 4×100 team also qualified for the finals, placing seventh. They’ll join Lakeview and Girard, who placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Gregory, of West Branch, and Champion’s Serenity Muresan and Rylee Hutton of Salem all move onto the finals in the 400-meter run.

In the regional meet at Lexington on Thursday, Chante Clinkscale of Niles highlighted the Mahoning Valley, posting the top times in both the 100 and 200 preliminaries.

She also guided the Niles girls 4×100 team to a finals-qualifying finish in the preliminaries. The Red Dragons 4×100 team consists of Shaleena Randolf, Abbey Reed, Annaliesse Perez-Booksing and Clinkscale.

Krista Perry of Crestview placed eighth in the shot put.

Day two of both meets will be held Saturday at their respective sites.
