JM gets excellent finishes in quad

NORTH JACKSON — Although both the LaBrae boys and girls track teams came away with victories on Tuesday, athletes from host Jackson-Milton and the Brookfield Warriors also put on impressive performances.

“Our leadership has been instrumental,” LaBrae coach Collin Dotson said. “Our ladies team is very senior-laden. They provide a lot of experience and hard work. Our boys are very junior and sophomore heavy. Those kids are competing very well.”

Jackson-Milton junior Cole Graham finished 22 seconds ahead of second place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:56. Speed and endurance run in the family as his brother, freshman Carter Graham, finished fifth.

“That was the fastest time I’ve ever had in the mile,” Cole Graham said. ” I’ve been training a lot, but I didn’t expect that good of a time. One of my goals is to make it to state this year. I’m a distance runner. Cross Country is my favorite. I’m also running the two-mile.”

Graham wasn’t finished, as he pushed down the stretch to easily win the 3200 meter run as well with a time of 10:46.

“His last lap (1:13) was faster than his first,” Jackson-Milton coach Kayla Morrison said. “He’s a hard worker. He’s dedicated. He sets the bar high, and sets a good example for everybody. I’d love to see him go to state this year.”

Jackson-Milton’s girls can also go the distance. Sophomore Katie Campbell won the 1600 meter (6:05). Her teammates Faith Sullivan and Kalli Ivari placed second and third.

“We’re small, but mighty, this year,” Morrison said. “Katie (Campbell) is a very hard worker. She will try anything. She’ll run any event, and she gives it her all.”

The victorious Vikings had a slew of winners in various events. Clayton Stout won the 110 meter hurdles (19.19), Tre’Von Drake was first in the high jump 5-4), Mara Kujala won the disc (114 feet) and shot put (31 feet), Mallory Cook finished second in both (111 feet and 30 feet).

Hannah Gilligan won the 100 meter (13.72), the 200 meter hurdles (29.25) and the long jump (13 feet 3 inches). The 4 x100 relay team (Aidan Stephens, Drake, Devin Carter, JJ Jethroe) took home first place.
