Hubbard girls third at state

Hubbard’s girls bowling team placed fourth after three qualifying rounds, won their head-to-head quarterfinal matchup and challenged the eventual state champion in the semifinal round, earning a third-place finish at the Division II state tournament on Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The Eagles beat Carrollton, 3 games to 1, in the quarterfinals and dropped a 3-1 decision to Coldwater in the semis. Hubbard won the first game, 169-146, over the Cavaliers, before losing the next two games, 172-153 and 215-159. Hubbard lost Game 4 and the match, 165-164.

Hubbard’s quarterfinal victory over Carrollton came after a Game 1 loss, 184-159. The Eagles then won three in a row, 176-148, 144-142 and 170-138.

Senior Amber Davis led the Eagles with a three-game qualifying series of 617.

Two Mahoning Valley individual bowlers also rolled well on Friday. Girard senior Rachel Foreback finished seventh among individuals with a 601 series and Struthers senior Madison Stanton was 21st with a 553.

Garrettsville Garfield placed 14th in the team qualifying rounds.
