Memo from OHSAA halts contact-sport scrimmages

The Ohio High School Athletic Association sent a memo to member schools Tuesday night informing them that school vs. school scrimmages have been suspended for contact sports until further notice.

The announcement, which came around 9 p.m. Tuesday, suspends scrimmages for football, soccer, field hockey and cross country. The memo, addressed by interim executive director Bob Goldring, did add that practices are still on track to begin Saturday, with low-contact sports such as golf, girls tennis and volleyball allowed to have scrimmages.

“We are waiting for more guidance from the governor’s office and department of health on when school vs. school competition can begin and are hopeful of that permission being granted for our normal contest dates later in August,” the memo stated. “(To) that end, school vs. school scrimmages are suspended. We do not anticipate that suspension changing soon, and there remains the possibility that no scrimmages will be permitted in the contact sports of football, soccer and field hockey.”

The memo added that conversations are taking place about changing the status of field hockey and cross country to low/non-contact sports.

The memo came on a day when Gov. Mike DeWine declined comment on the status of contact sports.

“Not today. I can’t,” he said. “These are tough calls for coaches, parents and the governor.”

Football teams can normally have up to three scrimmages prior to the regular season.
