Canfield wrestlers strong on first day

AUSTINTOWN — Canfield is in second place and has five semifinalists after the first day of the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament at Austintown Fitch High School.

The Cardinals, who have won two of the last three EOWL tournaments, also suffered one of the biggest upsets. Canfield has 112 total points, trailing Louisville (125.5). Beaver Local is third with 106 points.

The Cardinals’ Nick Barber, the No. 1 seed at 113 pounds, was knocked off of by unseeded Dan Adams of Louisville, 1-0, in the second round. Reaching the semifinals for Canfield were Tyler Stricko (106 pounds), Ethan Fletcher (120), Anthony D’Alesio (182), Chris Smith (220) and Richie Hofus (285).

Austintown Fitch is in fifth place (96 points) and has four semifinalists — Colin Roberts (120), Zach Richards (145), Jacob Smail (182) and A.J. Winterburn (220). Boardman is currently sixth (74), West Branch is seventh (69.5) and Howland is in eighth (55.5).

Another upset on Day 1 was unseeded Patrick Brown of Hubbard beating second-seeded Brenden Severs of Louisville.

Wrestling continues at 10 a.m., today. The semifinals begin at approximately 11:30 a.m., and the finals will be at 7 p.m.
