Fitch, Canfield do well at big meets

Fitch 4th at Top Gun

ALLIANCE — Austintown Fitch finished fourth overall at the Top Gun Tournament at Alliance High School and placed seven wrestlers — the most of any area team.

The Falcons’ Colin Roberts was the champion of the 126-pound weight class, beating Alex Vlars of Huntington, 8-4. Zach Richards was fifth at 145 pounds. Tyler Lintner took fifth at 138. Joey Perez finished sixth at 285. Jacob Smail placed seventh at 182. Austin Winterburn was seventh at 220, and Marc Judy took eighth at 120.

Fitch scored 138 team points. Aurora won with 230. Point Pleasant (W.Va.) was second with 224.5, and St. Vincent-St. Mary placed third with 140.5.

Boardman 13th (81 points). Sean O’Horo finished sixth at 145 pounds. Tyler Rea placed eighth for the Spartans at 132 pounds. West Branch finished 20th (68 points), with Kenny Mara placing second at 195 pounds, and Jake Hurst taking seventh at 285.

Girard was 21st (67 points), with Alex DelGarbino taking fourth at 138 pounds. Poland finished 29th (53.5), with Dan Pagan placing fifth at 220 pounds, and Dillon Smith taking seventh at 170 pounds. Hubbard’s lone placer was Conner Burrus, who took fifth at 126 pounds.

Canfield HAS 2 champs

AKRON — Canfield placed sixth at the Bill Dies Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Akron Firestone High School.

The Cardinals scored 116 team points and had four wrestlers place, including a pair of champions. Ethan Fletcher won the 120-pound crown, with a 2-0 victory over Canyon Wells in the final, and Anthony D’Alesio dominated at 182 pounds, defeating Jesse Kantazar of Tallmadge, 5-0, for the title.

Other placers for Canfield were Peyton Kostellic (fifth, 195 pounds), and Michael Crawford (seventh, 170).

Garfield, which finished 23rd, had three wrestlers place. Connor Hrubik finished fourth at 170 pounds. Hunter Andel was fifth at 132, and Noah Hoffman took eighth at 220 pounds.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights won the tournament with 239 points. West Holmes was second (161.5) and Brunswick and Olentangy Liberty tied for third (131.5).

Boys basketball

¯ NEWTON FALLS 67, GIRARD 45: GIRARD — Newton Falls’ Josh Honeycutt and Joey Kline each had a huge first half, and the Tigers put a non-league tilt away early on in the contest.

Honeycutt scored 13 of his 18 points, and Kline poured in 10 of his 18. The Tigers (12-1) held Girard to 15 first-half points and held a 35-15 lead.

Christian Graziano notched a game-high 21 points for the Indians (5-8).

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 60, LINSLY (W. Va.) 56: WHEELING, W. Va. — Mike Pelini and Devon Jenkins powered Cardinal Mooney to a come-from-behind victory over the Cadets in a cross-state contest.

Pelini scored a game-high 24 points, and the Cardinals (6-6) rallied from a 33-28 halftime deficit. Pelini sank all three of Mooney’s 3-pointers. Devon Jenkins added 23 points, including 11 2-point field goals.

Marshall Taylor paced Linsly (9-5) with 23 points.

¯ POLAND 47, NESHANNOCK 40: POLAND — Poland ran away with a non-conference matchup in the middle quarters.

The Bulldogs (8-4) outscored Neshannock, 22-13, in the second and third quarters after trailing 13-12 following the first 8 minutes. Michael Cougras scored a game-high 21 points.

Russell Kwiat paced the Lancers with 14 points.

Girls basketball

¯ POLAND 59, CARDINAL MOONEY 42: YOUNGSTOWN — Poland took control of a non-conference matchup with the Cardinals in the first quarter and cruised to a victory.

The Bulldogs (13-2) outscored Mooney, 17-2, in the first quarter. They led 35-12 at halftime. Poland’s Jackie Grisdale led all scorers with 19. Morgan Kluchar added 12.

Caitie Perry paced the Cardinals (8-5) with 12 points.

¯ LEETONIA 47, TORONTO 33: LEETONIA — The Bears led from start to finish in a non-conference matchup with Toronto.

Anna Buffone led the way for Leetonia (7-7) as she scored a game-high 17 points. The Bears’ defense held the Red Knights to four first-quarter points in taking an 11-4 lead. Haleigh Brock added 11 for Leetonia, which slowly pulled away with leads of 23-14 at halftime and 35-24 to start the fourth quarter.
