Trobek sets Hubbard goal-scoring record

HUBBARD — Hubbard senior A.J. Trobek overcame injuries and adversities in his freshman and sophomore years.

Although he lost all central vision in his right eye due to one of those injuries, he hasn’t let that set him back on the soccer field.

In his last regular-season game Thursday, he became the all-time leading scorer for the Hubbard boys program, surpassing the old mark of 74 goals as well as tying the Eagles’ season-record with 35 goals.

“It’s a major honor,” Trobek said. “It’s something that I never really came into the season thinking I would reach, but I’m very happy that I did. I couldn’t have done it without my coaches’ and teammates’ help.”

The Eagles avenged an earlier setback to Lakeview as they earned a 5-0 win in Northeast-8 Conference play.

“(Lakeview) beat us 4-0 and some comments were made about our team, our spirit, and our fight,” Trobek said. “We remembered that coming into this game. I think we proved them wrong.”

“Things just weren’t working in our favor (in the loss) that day,” Hubbard coach Cory Reinhard said. “A lot of things we weren’t tactically ready for. It was well-played by them. We just weren’t ready for them. We tried to make some adjustments and just fell apart.”

That wasn’t the case in the rematch as the Eagles came right at Lakeview and never let up in improving to 9-6-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the league. The Bulldogs dropped to 8-6 overall and 6-5 in the league.

“We moved the ball very well and very fast,” Trobeck said. “We worked well together as a team. I think it was the best all season.”

Trobek, who finished with four goals, got the scoring going less than six minutes into the game.

“A lot of teams like to key up on him, which they should,” Reinard said. “If we were playing against him, I would too. They like to draw players over and key on him. That opens up space for other guys. They shift the defense back and we come right back to him and it gives him space.”

Hubbard had eight shots on goal while limiting the Bulldogs to three in the opening half. Still, it wasn’t until Trobek’s goal within a second of the first half ending that gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The momentum carried over into the second half with Trobek getting his third goal at the 36:09 mark and Alvero Jordan pushing it out to 4-0 less than four minutes later.

Trobek closed the scoring with 25 seconds left as the Bulldogs had just one shot on goal in the second half.

Monumental to the Eagles’ success is center-midfielder Samuel Biro. His play allowed Hubbard to dictate the tempo of the game.

“He definitely plays field general,” Reinhard said. “He’s a workhorse. He has a lot of grit and hard tackles from side to side. This year we had to move him to a defensive center-mid role. He had to hold and anchor with somebody. It’s a lot of organization. It took us some time. Over the course of the season, he’s continued to grow. He played a wonderful game tonight.

The Eagles will meet Ursuline on Oct. 19 at Youngstown State in a Division II sectional final. Hubbard beat Ursuline 2-1 earlier in the year.

“(Ursuline is) a good team,” Reinard said. “They’re seeded fourth and we’re seeded fifth. We’re looking for a good game. It should be fun.”

“We’re just hoping to continue our good form,” Trobek added. “Hopefully,we get another win against Ursuline.”
