Canfield runners place in top 10 at Malone meet

MALONE INVITATIONAL: CANTON — Canfield sophomore Nick Plant took second in the Division I boys race in 16:57.8, a race run at GlenOak High School.

Canfield freshman Delaney O’Brien, who won Tuesday’s Mahoning County girls individual title, placed eighth in the Division I girls race (20:52.5).

SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: CENTERVILLE — Maplewood’s boys won the boys varsity B race over Wilmington, 95 to 102. John Crouch’s eighth-place finish (17:28.3) and Hunter Omerzo’s 10th-place finish (17:28.3) led the Rockets, which had their top four in the top 20. Boardman’s Mitchel Dunham took eighth in the varsity championship race (15:44.8), while teammate Frank Bero was 24th (16:06.7). Austintown Fitch’s Kristin Yeager took 24th in the Division I girls varsity A race.in 20:04.5, while Fitch’s Matt Smutny took 26th in the Division I boys varsity A race in 17:10.7.

Defending Division III state champion Miranda Stanhope of Badger was 37th in the girls championship race in 18:46.0 — facing mainly Division I runners. Poland’s Halle Sebest was 45th to lead the Bulldogs (19:02.4).

LORDSTOWN “JEAN ANN SMITH” CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL: LORDSTOWN — Mineral Ridge teams swept the varsity races. Riley Cowles won in a time of 21:01 as the Rams top five finished in the top 11. Mineral Ridge’s Timmy Pappagallo won the boys race in 17:48 to lead the Rams to the team title with 47 points.

NILES CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL: NILES — Howland’s boys, led by winner Lane Goble (17:28), beat out host Niles McKinley for the team title, 32 to 46. Goble beat out Red Dragons runner Micah Curry (18:07). Howland and Niles runners comprised the top five.

Cardinal Mooney’s Sylvia Tsarnas placed second in the girls varsity race (22:49).

CARDINAL INVITATIONAL XC MEET: MIDDLEFIELD — West Geauga’s Patrick Garrett edged out Grand Valley’s John Steimle, 16:39.3 to 16:40.2 to win the boys varsity title.
