Scrappers clobber Thunder, 18-5

For the first two games of this week’s series between the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Trenton, the Thunder benefited from a lack of command by the Scrappers’ pitching staff.

On Thursday, the Thunder returned the favor, resulting in a resounding 18-5 Scrappers win at Eastwood Field.

Trailing 4-1, the Scrappers responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. Khi Holiday, JC Vanek and Daniel Stewart all collected an RBI to tie the game.

Then, things got sloppy for the Trenton bullpen, and the control issues, along with timely hitting, resulted in a Scrappers blowout.

Trenton reliever Matthwe Hoskins entered the game in the fourth and hit the first two batters he faced. He also threw a pair of wild pitches and walked a batter in the frame, resulting in a Scrappers 8-4 lead.

The Scrappers added a run in the fifth, then scored five runs in the sixth to blow the game wide open.

As he did on Wednesday, Stewart led the Scrappers’ offense. Stewart went 4-for-6 with three RBI. In his two games with the Scrappers, Stewart is 9-for-11 with six RBI.

Max Johnson was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Max Hartman had three hits with an RBI. Kendrey Maduro had two hits with a team-high four RBI.

Trenton pitchers issued eight walks, threw four wild pitches and hit four batters.

The Scrappers begin a three-game series tonight in Frederick.

Starting at $3.23/week.
