STRUTHERS — Mother Nature continued to wreak havoc on the first week of spring sports Wednesday, as Ursuline’s home opener against West Branch was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning due to inclement weather.

At the time the game was called, the Irish and Warriors were tied 4-4, with Ursuline having the bases loaded with one out with Nick Bako up at bat.

Ursuline head coach Paul Kempe said the game would be continued at a later date to be determined. He added that the two teams will also likely play another game once they finish the first one on the rescheduled date.

After throwing Aaron Tucker for 4.1 innings, Warriors head coach Rick Mulinix elected to put in Gavin Bell shortly before the game was suspended. CJ Frasco had pitched five complete innings for Ursuline up to that point.

After two scoreless innings to open the game, Ursuline got on the board first with a run in the third inning. An RBI base hit from Johnny Cambert scored Dylan Casey.

In the fourth inning, each team scored two runs. West Branch’s runs came on a two-RBI single from Reed Williams that scored Bell and Beau Alazaus, while Ursuline’s were scored on RBI sacrifice flies from Marc Manning and Casey.

The Warriors continued where they left off in the top of the fifth inning, as Hunter Shields hit an RBI double and Alazaus picked up his first RBI on a fielder’s choice. Cambert scored his second RBI of the game for Ursuline in the bottom of the fifth shortly before the game was called.
