All earned benefits must be guaranteed
DEAR EDITOR:
I’m pleased to see in recent letter, people are beginning to criticize the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.
Prior to working in the school system for the past 21 years, my wife worked 22 years in jobs where Social Security was deducted. Forty-three years of work ought to be enough to retire on; however, with the WEP currently, that is not an option.
We see many politicians have helped with the fight against the PBGC for the pensions of former Packard employees. In our fight against PBGC, we former Republic Steel employees did not get the political support that they have; however, our case made it to the Supreme Court, as Packard’s is right now, but they threw it out.
The bottom line is, my wife and I face losing about $1,200 a month in combined pension benefits, if nothing is changed.
It’s not fair to anyone to have benefits earned taken away. I’d urge anyone with this situation to contact your elected officials and tell them to start fighting for this to change.
