Hermitage must enforce speed laws

DEAR EDITOR:

We are having a speeding problem in my Hermitage, Pa., residential neighborhood. It involves only 10 houses, but six of the 10 are occupied by senior citizens. We have to either cross the busy road and stand there to retrieve our newspaper and mail, or walk in front of them, standing on the road to retrieve both. The other four houses must do the same thing.

I am 75 years old, and I must cross the street for my newspaper and mail. Last August, I came to within 2 to 3 feet of being run over and killed by a speeding vehicle. A few days ago, I was in the front yard with my dog and witnessed a westbound car that crossed the double yellow line and passed the car in front of him.

I have been fighting with Duane Piccirilli, president of the city commissioners, for years to provide a police presence to curb this speeding and the running of a stop sign at the intersection in this area for years. Piccirilli simply refuses. City Manager Gary Hinkson, who oversees the police department, also refuses to address this issue.

All I am asking for is laws to be enforced, something for which all my neighbors pay property taxes. I hope this letter wakes someone up in Hermitage, as the city commissioners do not care to stop this constant violation of the Pennsylvania motor vehicle laws. I believe it is blatant discrimination against senior citizens, and it must stop.
