With spring weather, children are outdoors. Please be cautious driving. I am concerned about small motorized bikes that young children drive on streets. In two cases, children were not supervised by an adult. One child looked about age 4, and another about 9 as they rode across busy streets. Bikes are very small and visibility is limited. I believe these motorized bikes belong in an enclosed safe space supervised by a parent, rather than in traffic. Protect our children.

We see that the Democrats want to pass new constitutional and common-sense gun laws. I’m betting they are neither. Exactly how would their proposals end the gun violence in Youngstown?

Columbiana

Mayor Jamael Tito Brown recently called Youngstown’s $88 million stimulus money a “legacy opportunity” for Youngstown. I humbly suggest the “legacy opportunity” for our city is repaving Market Street from Midlothian Boulevard to Indianola Avenue. It’s an opportunity to benefit everyone in every community that may ever visit downtown, even though it has nothing to do with COVID-19 pandemic. We don’t need any more statues or monuments or endowments. We need to fix what’s broken. That’s a legacy opportunity.

I just read about U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan testifying before the International Trade Commission about harmful effects subsidized imports have on local seamless tube manufacturers in the oil / gas industry like Youngstown’s Vallourec Star who employs 500-plus and “can be part of the area’s economic recovery.” If he was paying attention, he’d know President Biden just closed two major U.S. pipelines, putting 100,000 citizens out of work, which also will affect Vallourec. Damage comes from within.

When did you last thank your postal carrier? It’s time to acknowledge that of the packages delivered by your mail carrier, many of them bear the logo of other delivery companies. FedEx, Amazon, UPS and DHL rely on, and dump, their excess packages, which they cannot deliver, on the USPS. Your mailman takes it the last mile. In this pandemic year, kindness also is contagious. Be a carrier.

The comment last Saturday was happy we now have a president that the country can be proud of. The southern border is a disaster, when he is questioned only softball questions are asked. He looks like a robot during his brief speeches, and he permitted China to lecture us about human rights on US soil. What am I missing?

Boardman

Want to control gun violence? Start enforcing laws on the books. You do the crime, you do the time; one trial, one appeal and gone. And start politics in the center, and rule for the people, not the party. Stop all the venom spitting from the pulpit like a fire and brimstone preacher. Lastly, control the immigrants and rabble-rousers; peace and tranquility. It will work.

Our president held his first news conference since inauguration — 64 days. This self-proclaimed “open” administration did not call on Fox News for a question, probably because Fox reporters would not limit themselves to soft questions. I hope others are as embarrassed and ashamed as I am of the position the country now shows to the world. If we are this weak, China will break us down into nonfunctioning power in short order.

Hallelujah. With $8 million-plus coming to Boardman from the relief bill, I would hope Boardman flooding problems could be corrected. It will be interesting how the money is spent. Maybe they can quit taxing us for the ABC water district.

Regarding the editorial on mass vaccinations at the former Dillard’s in Boardman being a good thing, why not use the Covelli Centre? Minorities get sick and die of COVID-19 at higher than national rate. It hits their pockets harder. Vaccination sites have been in Austintown, Boardman and Canfield. No major sites in Youngstown. It makes sense to vaccinate where those suffering the most live. Those outside Youngstown can more easily get there than vice versa. If it’s systemic, then fix it!

The GM workers at least had a chance to transfer and get a viable pension. When Youngstown Sheet & Tube shut down Sept. 19, 1977, there were few chances to transfer. Some were lucky to transfer to LTV Steel in Cleveland, Pittsburgh or Indiana until December 2001 when LTV filed bankruptcy. No severance, no insurance and no pension! PBGC took over the pensions and cut them by over 60 percent. GM employees be happy!

Austintown

This is a big thank you to 2nd Ward Councilman Bryan Tedesco. He does so much to help the residents of Campbell, not only in the 2nd Ward, but the entire city. On snowy days he has been seen in the early hours of the morning clearing sidewalks and plowing the city park for the walkers. This is just a small example of his dedication to the city, and his accomplishments are numerous.

Just received my Trump COVID-19 vaccination. According to medical experts, producing one vaccine takes two to four years. President Trump’s promise to have a vaccine in one year was ridiculed as a political stunt by his detractors and national media. But like so many other promises, this one was kept as well. Love him or hate him, “Warp speed” delivered three vaccines in an unprecedented time. Normal D.C. speed would have cost millions more lives. Do the math.

What a pleasure it was to listen March 11 to the empathetic, positive, quantifiable, promising and reassuring presentation of the enthusiastic leader of the world’s longest, continuing experiment in self-government. President Biden has done more in 50 days to control the pandemic, safely reopen schools, buoy small business and ease the financial suffering of the unemployed and the homeless than his predecessor did in four years. Thank God we have a president worthy of the title once again.

I find it fitting that conservatives are up in arms about Mr. Potato Head, because they act like children. Just look at the giant temper tantrum they threw Jan. 6 when they didn’t get their way! So, conservatives, keep worrying about toys. The grown-ups work on fixing the real issues our country is facing. What will your next crusade be about, G.I. Joe and My Little Pony?

The Boardman rail crossing at Southern Boulevard and Indianola Road is deplorable and in an unsafe condition. There are uneven tracks and large potholes. Boardman Township trustees, administration and Mahoning County engineers need to be more proactive and take the initiative to get this condition rectified.

Fencing, national guard troops and millions of dollars are being spent by Congress to protect themselves from American citizens, while American citizens have less than adequate border protection from illegal, non-citizens. Somehow this seems like an extremely elitist position for our public officials to take. More protection for them, less for us.

Watching the Conservative Political Action Convention makes me want to paraphrase a Mark Twain quote to be “The principal difference between a GOP voter and a cat is that a cat won’t sit on a hot stove twice.”

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan said of the $1.9 trillion relief bill, “With this legislation, we can defeat COVID-19.” How does a bridge in New York (Schumer), train tunnel in San Francisco (Pelosi) or funding for the arts defeat COVID-19? I don’t see Ohio or Mahoning Valley getting money to build any unnecessary project. I guess Ryan is more concerned about the radical left agenda than people of his district. I hope Valley people remember where Ryan’ s true allegiance is.

Do President Joe Biden’s actions make sense? He stopped XL pipeline construction, eliminating 1,000 current and 10,000 future jobs jeopardizing energy independence and hurting Canada. During a weak economy and a pandemic, he stopped border wall construction, thereby allowing more illegal immigrants into our country. More people chasing few jobs hurts low-wage earners; more people to test and vaccinate strain our health system. The $1.9 trillion relief bill has 80 to 90 percent non-COVID-related spending. Does that help us?

You would be outraged if Giant Eagle or Walmart charged your credit / debit card $400 per month to pay for other people’s (some wealthy) groceries.

Why do we allow local schools to charge us $400 per month in house taxes to pay to educate other people’s children? Use your child tax credit and pay for your own kid’s education. Stop the real steal!

Youngstown

Do I have this right? Feminists who fought for equality in sports now have to move over for men who want to be women? Maybe I should ask the press secretary. But then I’ll have to circle back, unless I hand in my question ahead of time so I can be denied an answer. If I want an answer to my question, I’ll have to hand in a different question.

FBI Director Christopher Wray was questioned about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. He mentioned many times that antifa was not seen participating, but white supremacists were. I took 5 seconds and Googled Antifa, capitol, and John Sullivan popped up where he is an Antifa leader, stormed the Capitol taking video that was contracted by CNN and NBC and paid him $70K. How is it the FBI had no knowledge of this? Does the FBI think we are uninformed?
