Improvements coming to Sunday Vindy

If you’re looking for this regular column in its usual spot in the A section of next Sunday’s newspaper, you won’t find it.

Yes, I’ll still be writing my weekly column; it just won’t be in the A section — nor will be the other Opinion page features.

Beginning Sunday, March 5, we are making some minor changes to the Sunday edition in order to expand our coverage in areas that we have found to be popular among readers.

In order to ensure we have enough space, we will be relocating some regular features. They still will be here. They just might be in a different place.

SUNDAY LIFE

First, the Life section will be expanded. This will give us space to include all the regular features you know and love — like the New York Times crossword puzzle and syndicated feature columns — while also adding more feature stories along with photos provided by you, dear reader. Community photos of things like club news, Scouts, fundraisers, five-generation photos, class reunions, other community functions and more, submitted by readers are commonly called “Society news.”

The best way for you to submit photos and information is to email it to Society@vindy.com. Or you may submit content through our website portal called “The Virtual Newsroom.” You get there by going to www.vindy.com and clicking the small button beneath our logo at the top of the page labeled “Submit News.”

Anytime you send a photo for print, please send it as “large” or “actual” file size. That may be larger than you are accustomed to sending to your friends or family, but it helps give us the ability to publish it in the best possible quality in our print edition. Also, include full names of all people appearing in the photos for our published caption. Don’t forget your contact information so we can reach you if we have any questions.

Use this same format to submit photos and information for weddings, engagements and noteworthy anniversaries.

We publish all this information free of charge, so don’t be shy about sending it to us. Call Theresa in the newsroom at 330-841-1738 with questions.

BUSINESS AND OPINION

The Business section also will have its own section front page. It will be joined by the popular “Motley Fool” page full of educational business news, moving from Mondays to Sundays.

In that section, readers also now will find an expanded Opinion section. You still will be able to enjoy the usual Opinion page with two syndicated columnists (typically sharing their views from opposite ends of the political spectrum), the newspaper’s opinion and a political cartoon. The second Opinion page still will be the usual “op-ed” page containing my column and letters to the editor. And beginning next Sunday, a third Sunday Opinion page will be added in order to allow us space to invite and accommodate more op-eds, or guest columns on hot topics. It also might allow us to publish more letters to the editor, especially when we see upticks in reader commentary, around election season, for instance.

I have long believed the newspaper’s opinion shared in our daily editorial is not intended to serve as the end of a conversation, but rather is a starting point for conversation. I always encourage readers to share their thoughts via letters to the editor. Diverse and varied opinions are welcome, provided they are respectful. Letters should be limited to 450 words, but preference is giving to shorter letters.

To submit a letter for possible publication, email: editor@tribtoday.com; or use the “Virtual Newsroom” portal on the top of our web page, www.vindy.com, that I described in this column. Letters also may be mailed to “Letters to the Editor,” The Vindicator, 240 Franklin Street SE, Warren, Ohio 44483. Include your name, community and a daytime telephone number for verification purposes.

There will be a few other minor changes coming, as well, including things like moving the weather report box to page A2 on Sundays. Everything we are doing is intended to improve our coverage or allow more space for things that our readers have told us are important to them.

Get ready! It all begins next Sunday.
