Dr. David B. Brown 1924-2021

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Dr. David B. Brown, 96, formerly of Youngstown, passed away peacefully at home, Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.

Dr. Brown was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Youngstown and graduated from The Rayen High School as salutatorian. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a lieutenant in the Army. After completing his service, he graduated from The Ohio State University and the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He was a dedicated Buckeye his entire life.

Shortly thereafter, he returned to Youngstown, where he practiced medicine for 48 years as a gastroenterologist, becoming the head of the Department of Gastroenterology at The Youngstown Hospital Association. Dr. Brown was an active member of the Youngstown community. He was a member of Congregation Rodef Sholom for 60 years and served on its board of directors.

In 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Sally Smigelsky (deceased 1973). They had three children, Michael S. Brown (Jane) of Needham, Mass., Robin J. Brown (Debbi) of Calabasas, Calif. and Pamela S. Beck (Dave) of Columbus. In 1985, he married Judith Goodman of Cincinnati. They lived in Youngstown until they moved to Florida in 2010. During their 35 years together, they enjoyed traveling the world, live theatre, ballet, attending film festivals and tennis. They also enjoyed spending time with family.

In addition to his children, he leaves behind eight grandchildren, Ellie Brown, Zachary Brown, Emily Hajjar, Abigail Iorio, Marissa Stern, Valerie Stern, Jocelin Stern and Alexandra Petrasek; seven great-grandchildren; and stepsons, John Goodman of Louisville, Ky. and Andrew Goodman (deceased 2008).

A private funeral service is being held for the immediate family.

The family requests that any expressions of sympathy be sent to the Alzheimers Association, earmarked for research.
