Geraldine Gatta 1934-2020

NILES — Geraldine Gatta, 86, passed away at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Bagnoli Iripino, Italy, the daughter of Domenico and Maria Domenica Toriello Chieffo.

Geraldine was a homemaker, member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, Infante Jesus of Prague Guild, and Immaculate Conception Society. She was also a member of Renewal Team No. 1, Catholic Women’s Guild, and enjoyed cooking and baking.

Geraldine’s life was devoted to her faith and family. Her most joyous times were Sunday and holiday dinners, surrounded by the ones she loved. Geraldine had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. They will live their lives carrying out her words of wisdom which will always be cherished memories. She also had a special place in her heart for all of her nephews, nieces and their families

She will be sadly missed by four daughters, Angela Byrom and her husband Robert of Westerville, Anna Mae Searfoss and her husband John of Alliance, Gerri Melillo and her husband Mike of Niles, and Laurena Rouan and her husband, Robert of Niles; 12 grandchildren, Stephen Byrom (Michael), Lauren Tiemeier (Brian), Eric Fickes (Anne), Deanna Prezioso (Rocky), Katie McMullen (Tom), Leigh Ann Ferrall (Dave), Michelle Spano (Randy), Allison Johnson (Chaz), Vincent Melillo (Christi), Scott Rouan, Bob McDermott (Kate) and Megan McDermott (Kyle); and 14 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Larry Gatta, whom she married Dec. 2, 1950, died May 6, 2017. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Gatta Fickes; two brothers, Jimmy Chieffo and Aniello Chieffo; and five sisters, Dora Chieffo, Rose Meloro, Antoinette Chieffo, Dolores Gatta and Lucia Meloro.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles, where social distancing will be practiced and facial coverings strongly recommended.

Private burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
