Man is shot, then charged with a felony
YOUNGSTOWN — David J. Christian was arraigned on a charge of felony domestic violence in a Friday night altercation on Orrin Avenue on the East Side in which he was captured on video telling a woman to shoot him as he was trying to break down her door and charging at her.
Officers were called to the home for a domestic that escalated into a shooting. When they arrived, Christian, 47, who had blood on his sweatshirt and face, walked up to officers in front of the house and said, “I have been shot.”
The man was taken to a police cruiser to await ambulance personnel. He was later taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and then taken to the Mahoning County jail.
He was arraigned Monday on the third-degree felony and will return for a preliminary hearing at 9:15 a.m. Dec. 15. If convicted, he could get several years in prison.
When officers walked into the house, they saw blood on the front door and splattered on the front entrance to the home, the report states. Officers were told where to find the firearm and they secured it.
The woman said she and Christian had been arguing over a car that was stuck in the snow, but she said Christian was drinking heavily and became “irate.” They were arguing when Christian told her to shut up and punched her in the mouth with a closed fist.
She told him to leave. While she was escorting him out, he pushed her and threatened her. She pushed him out of the door. But Christian “kept telling her to shoot him and trying to kick the door open,” the report states.
“Eventually, (the woman) opened the door, and that is when Christian charged at her again to attack her,” the report states. The woman “had her firearm and discharged the firearm at (Christian). However, she stated that she didn’t realize she fired the firearm,” the report states.
Officers noted that the woman had a laceration on her bottom lip and her teeth were bleeding.
Officers saw a bullet shell casing to the far left of the living room.
In addition to the video showing the moments before the woman shot her gun, it also recorded Christian telling the woman he was going to break her (possessions) and then shattering the windshield on her car with a broom, the report states.
