Turn signal failure leads to drug arrest in Boardman
BOARDMAN — A local man was arrested on drug charges after failing to use his turn signal.
James Coffin, 71, who has a lengthy criminal and traffic record dating back at least 20 years, was pulled over by Boardman police about 3 a.m. Thursday.
He is due in Mahoning County Boardman Court on Tuesday, where he faces charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension, both misdemeanors. Coffin also may face felony charges for suspected drugs that were found in his vehicle.
The report states an officer saw Coffin driving along Glenwood Avenue toward West Boulevard. Coffin was in the left — inside — lane and turned onto West Boulevard by crossing the right — outside — lane, allegedly all without using his turn signal.
The officer followed and watched as Coffin allegedly made several more turns without using his turn signal. The officer pulled him over on Vineland Place, near U.S. Route 224. Another officer arrived shortly thereafter to assist.
As they ran his license and determined him to be under suspension, they also could see an open cigarette pack in plain view with a baggie inside that appeared to contain a white rock substance believed to be narcotics.
Police cuffed Coffin on suspicion of drug possession and a police dog indicated more drugs were in the car. Police found two crack pipes with burned residue in them in two different places in the car.
Coffin was arrested and taken to Boardman police department and his vehicle was impounded.
Coffin’s record of criminal and traffic violations dates back to 2004 when he pleaded guilty to illegal transfer of license plates. Other criminal offenses date back to 2007, when a drug possession charge was pleaded down to disorderly conduct.
Virtually all of Coffin’s offenses have taken place in Boardman, and most of his criminal charges are drug related.
In 2017, in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, he was found guilty of cocaine possession.
In 2022, he was found guilty of receiving stolen property and misuse of a credit card. He has a drug possession charge still pending from July, when he was pulled over for driving with a revoked license in an unsafe vehicle.
