Suspects in car break-ins in Canfield apprehended

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — Maj. Jeff Allen of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office told trustees at this week’s meeting that two men were arrested after an investigation into recent car break-ins.

“We locked up two guys for the break-ins,” he said. “They were the same two we locked up a year ago for the same crimes. They spent a couple months in jail, got out, and began again. This time they were hit with 40 counts of theft, and I hope we won’t be dealing with them for a while.”

Allen also pointed out recent home break-ins in Beaver Township. He said his department is working with Beaver police on the break-ins, and added it has not reached Canfield Township so far.

He said the biggest area his deputies are dealing with right now are traffic accidents. He said with the change of weather it is to be expected.

The only other item Allen presented was the recent request to certify golf carts for street travel.

“We won’t do that,” he said.

On a different matter, Zoning Inspector Traci DeCapua mentioned the barking dog complaints. She said the Ohio Revised Code does not give townships the ability to enforce the issue, and it actually becomes a civil matter.

“The sheriff really can’t do anything except serve as a negotiator between neighbors,” DeCapua said. “The solution is that neighbors need to talk to each other.”

Public Works Foreman Bob Burkett reported several mailboxes are leaning and ready to fall over. He said when the township conducts snow removal, the boxes will likely fall over.

“We (the township) should not have to pay to replace mail boxes that are ready to fall over,” he told trustees.

Trustee Marie Cartwright said the boxes in question should be noted so the township will have proof.

Burkett also mentioned the blacktop on Fox Den. He said there appears to have been a car fire at the entrance to Fox Den that “messed up” the blacktop.

“The blacktop is damaged,” he said, “and will need to have a section cut out and replaced.”

Burkett said he would check to see if there is a fire or police report on the fire to see who is responsible for the street damage.

In other business, trustees approved repairs to Township Truck 204 not to exceed $6,788.68 at Ascendance Truck Center in Austintown. They also approved requesting assistance from the ABC Water and Stormwater District for the 2025 Westbury Park catch basin repairs in the amount of $11,197.11.

Starting at $3.23/week.
