Early-morning traffic stop leads to drug charges for halfway house resident

BOARDMAN — A resident of a halfway house in Boardman faces drug charges following an early-morning traffic stop.

Alisha Sue Klotz, 30, whose current address is New Day Recovery on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman, was arrested Tuesday following a traffic stop at South Avenue and Mathews Road.

She remains in Mahoning County jail and will appear this morning in Mahoning County Court in Boardman on charges of possession of drug abuse instruments, a first-degree misdemeanor, and a general drug paraphernalia offense, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

The report states police pulled over the Nissan Ultima around 2:15 a.m. after the officer driving behind it ran the plates and found they were registered to a different make and model. The owner, Richard Humphrey, 56, of Youngstown, explained to police that the plate was his sister’s, and he was in the process of having it transferred. He provided documentation that supported his claim, but police also determined he was driving under suspension.

They asked how he knew the other people in the car, and he said one was his roommate and the woman was someone they had picked up in the middle of the road somewhere in Youngstown.

Upon searching the car, they found Klotz’s purse. Inside it, allegedly, were one used syringe with blood in the tube, one unused syringe, a plastic baggie containing white powder and a folded-over piece of paper containing a dark substance that Klotz said was wax.

When police placed her in handcuffs, under arrest for the syringes, they noticed she was clenching her behind. Klotz admitted that she had tried to hide a crack pipe, and it had slid out and was trapped inside her leggings.

Klotz then told police she thought the crack pipe had broken inside her and caused internal injury.

Medics at a local hospital later determined there was no broken glass within her. She then told them that she had swallowed a size AA battery. Eventually, she was medically cleared and released to police custody. The report states that Klotz’s possession charge is escalated because she is still on community control for a previous conviction. No prior offense can be found in either Mahoning County or Youngstown Municipal Court records.

Other drug charges may come, depending upon the results of lab tests on the two substances found in Klotz’s possession.

Humphrey was issued a citation for driving under suspension as he and his other passenger had to wait for a ride from a licensed driver.
