Siberian huskies mush in snow, enjoy the shows
WARREN — Local Siberian husky owners barked their excitement about their sled races and experiences around the area.
Members of the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Cleveland brought sleds, equipment and huskies to the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library for the recent “All Things Sled” program.
Austintown resident and club President Shelley Kacenski brought her husky, Chase, to the library, which attracted 80 attendees.
Kacenski said the club is registered with the American Kennel Club and anyone with a husky can join. Members do not have to show or compete with their dog. She added that she has owned huskies for 20 to 25 years and many have pulled sleds and participated in competitions.
The American Kennel Club has husky-only shows, with the next one in Cleveland running April 19-21.
Paula Harding of Litchfield, Medina County, said she has had 14 Siberian huskies since acquiring her first in 1977 after graduating from high school.
Harding said she has competed in the Punderson Sled Dog Race, which takes place 14 miles from Middlefield at Punderson State Park, along with events in New York and Michigan.
Huskies love to run, Harding and Kacenski said, which makes them a perfect fit for racing.
Harding said the lead dog takes commands and drives the team. The point dogs are in training to be lead dogs and will follow their actions.
“The dogs like to get out there and run and have a good time,” Harding said.
She said Huskies can live to 18 or 20 years old and begin training at 9 months. They then start racing around 2 years old.
