YOUNGSTOWN — Paul Stanley and the rest of KISS are known for painting their faces. The Butler Institute of American Art is about to show what Stanley can do on canvas.

The lead singer and guitarist for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band will attend a private reception at the Youngstown museum Aug. 12 in conjunction with “Paul Stanley: The Other Side,” an exhibition opening Aug. 13 and running through Oct. 8.

“The Other Side” will include 16 works, both acrylic paintings and mixed media pieces.

In announcing the exhibition, Butler Executive Director Louis A. Zona said, “Paul Stanley is a figurative artist whose depictions of the human form are empowered by an explosive use of color. But his paintings move beyond the figure and into imaginary worlds where his KISS persona floats through stars, guitars, flags, hearts and other background imagery, enhancing the many approaches to the figure seen (in) the bulk of the work.

“Stanley is an artist who encourages both order and dissonance in fields of color and form. His work can be viewed as a celebration of our visual universe.”

Stanley designed the iconic KISS emblem, and his artistic influence can be seen in the band’s album covers, stage design and apparel.

While admission to the exhibition will be free and open to the public, getting into the preview reception won’t be that easy. The cost is $1,000 for two admitted guests, who also will receive one commemorative artwork hand-signed by Stanley. The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 12 at the museum, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown, and includes hors d’oeuvres and an open bar.

The reception is designed as a major fundraiser to assist the Butler with accessibility.
