Weathersfield plans for summer street projects

WEATHERSFIELD — Township officials are preparing for street paving and other projects this summer.

Trustees on Tuesday awarded the 2023 road improvement project to Shelly and Sands Inc. of North Jackson at $149,821. The streets scheduled to be paved are Oakwood Street, Coates Drive and Country Meadows Avenue.

Officials said the project was bid as part of the county engineer’s countywide road program, state capital improvement program and local government entities program.

Trustees also are submitting an application for $122,377 Community Development Block Grant funds for roadway and storm sewer improvements on James Street, Lucetta Street, First Street and Main Street.

Trustee Steve Gerberry said that project also will involve paving of roads.

Trustee Ed Whittaker said capital improvement projects through Ohio Department of Transportation, including state Route 46 drainage repair work and resurfacing state Route 169 from Prospect Street to Gilbert Street, will be covered by grants.

NEW STAFF

Trustees have hired Ted Pedigrew and Jackson Iceman both as probationary firefighters effective May 1.

The two will be trained and evaluated over the next six months by fire Chief Tom Lambert and fire officers. At the conclusion of the six-month probationary period, Lambert will determine if Pedigrew and Iceman should be promoted to firefighters.

Trustees also approved an agreement with the Gledhill Road Machinery Co. of Galion to complete the upfit on three new diesel dump trucks for a total project cost of $172,487.

Fire officials also reminded residents that open burning is not permitted in the township. Officials said brush fires have placed firefighters and residents’ properties at risk.

• Approved a resolution in support of the efforts to increase communication and land-use compatibility with the Youngstown Air Reserve Station;

• Set a Memorial Day ceremony for 10 a.m. May 29 at the community park off Main Street;
