Austintown man suspect in firearm thefts

Braceville gun store broken into early Monday morning

BRACEVILLE — An Austintown man was brought to Trumbull County jail Monday after he and three others were accused of stealing almost three dozen firearms from Rattlesnake Hill Sporting Goods at 675 state Route 534 NW.

One other man in custody in Mahoning County, while Trumbull County Sheriff Paul Monroe said two other suspects are at large.

A Trumbull County 911 report states a witness saw two men in all-dark clothing with ski masks run out of the store shortly before 2:30 a.m. The caller told dispatchers the bandits fled in an older bright red Saturn Vue north on Route 534.

Monroe said two vehicles were involved in the crime, parked across the street. The sheriff said the four suspects had gone into the store sometime Sunday, looked around and asked a few questions before leaving.

They later returned after hours and broke the lock of the front door. The report states the bandits left the front door wide open as they left.

Stolen were some 34 firearms, including more than two dozen 9 mm and other caliber handguns of Glock, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, Sig Sauer and Springfield Hellcat models. Also taken were five rifles — Keltec, Savage and Rossi models of various calibers — a Winchester long gun shotgun, and two Escort shotguns, a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge.

All told, the firearms were worth in excess of $10,000, the report states.

DETAINED

By 3:30 a.m. Monday, detectives had an address at the Compass West apartment complex in Austintown, which was linked to Daquantae Kimbrough, 25. Mahoning County authorities were alerted, and Kimbrough was detained later in the day as he was visiting someone at the Mahoning County jail.

By 6 p.m., Trumbull County deputies had picked up Kimbrough and booked him into the Trumbull County facility on a warrant for a 2022 theft offense being handled in Girard Municipal Court.

Monroe said another suspect, Brendon Nichols, 28, of Boardman, was taken into custody Tuesday after a short standoff at his home. He now sits in Mahoning County jail on a federal alcohol, tobacco and firearms warrant. The sheriff said authorities are still looking for two other suspects in the break-in.

Authorities also on Monday went to the residence of Jalen McCall, 18, of Campbell, where two of the firearms were recovered. Monroe said McCall fled the scene, and authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in the case. If someone knows about the whereabouts of McCall, they are asked to call 330-675-2730.

Monroe said no charges have been filed yet in the Rattlesnake break-in, saying this will be a federal court case.

The sheriff, however, said he was pleased with the help received from other law enforcement entities, including Austintown, Boardman and Campbell police departments, that helped solve the case in a timely manner.

“This was a true team effort that speaks volumes about law cooperation in the Valley,” Monroe said. “There was a lot of good police work by our detectives Jolene Marcello and John Dina. A lot of sweat went into this.”
