Ryan outspent Vance 4-1 in failed bid for Senate

Democrat Tim Ryan collected a record $57.58 million in contributions for his unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign in Ohio, outraising Republican J.D. Vance by about a 4-to-1 margin.

But Ryan lost the Nov. 8 election by 6.11 percent to Vance.

The campaigns of Ryan and Vance filed post-general election campaign finance reports with the Federal Election Commission that took in the period of Oct. 20 to Nov. 28.

Vance, a first-time candidate, raised $15.6 million overall for his campaign. That included $1.4 million he loaned his committee with $700,000 of it repaid.

Vance’s campaign also greatly benefited from outside spending groups.

By far, the largest assistance for Vance came from the Senate Leadership Fund, a super political action committee which spent about $30 million on the race and is connected to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In comparison, Save America Fund, a Democratic super PAC, spent the most in support of Ryan’s bid with about $7.6 million.

RECORDS SET

Ryan of Howland, an outgoing 10-term U.S. House member, raised more money than any Senate candidate in Ohio history.

During the post-general filing period, Ryan raised $9.59 million. Including the money raised in the pre-general period, from Oct. 1 to 19, Ryan collected $18.65 million in less than two months. That would represent a record amount for a full quarter, and Ryan did it with a month to spare though he likely receive a minimal amount in the remaining 33 days in this quarter.

In the third quarter, which took in July 1 to Sept. 30, Ryan raised $17.27 million — a record for a Senate candidate in Ohio for a filing quarter.

Overall, Ryan raised $57.58 million for his campaign with $51.97 million coming from individual donors, $1.31 million from PACs and $4.27 million from transfers by the Tim Ryan Victory Fund 2022, a joint fundraising committee with the Ohio Democratic Party and America 2.0, Ryan’s leadership PAC. The remaining $30,000 or so were offsets to expenditures such as refunds and rebates.

Ryan also set a spending record for a Senate campaign in Ohio. Ryan’s campaign spent $55.55 million in the Senate race, including $12 million in the post-general filing period.

The previous records were set in the 2018 Senate race by Democrat Sherrod Brown of Cleveland. He raised $28.92 million and spent $29.08 million in that successful campaign.

VANCE MONEY

Vance of Cincinnati, a venture capitalist and author, raised $15.6 million on his election bid, including $2.99 million in the post-general filing period.

Including the money raised in the pre-general period of Oct. 1 to 19, Vance raised $5.26 million between Oct. 1 and Nov. 28. Ryan outraised him 3.5-to-1 during that time period.

Overall, Vance raised $15.6 million for his campaign with $8.73 million from individual donors, about $800,000 from PACs, the $1.4 million loan and $4.67 million from two joint fundraising committees he has.

Vance spent $14.54 million on his campaign, including $4.99 million in the post-general filing period.

He had about $1 million in his campaign fund as of Nov. 28.
