19-year-old indicted in death of man, 21

YOUNGSTOWN — Mekhi L. Venable, 19, was indicted Thursday on aggravated murder with two gun specifications and murder with two gun specifications in the Sept. 29 shooting death of Jacob Moore, 21, on New York Avenue on the North Side.

One of the gun specifications is a three-year specification, and the other is a five-year “drive-by shooting” specification. Such specifications can add prison time.

Aggravated murder can carry a penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted, or lesser life prison sentences.

During a Nov. 16 preliminary hearing in Youngstown Municipal Court, a woman testified that she, her two small children, Moore and two other males were in a car the night Moore was shot to death on New York Avenue at the bottom of the hill near Logan Avenue.

Under questioning by Elliousa Baier, assistant Youngstown law director, and John Juhasz, Venable’s attorney, the woman said Moore and the two other males in her car had guns.

The witness said Venable was inside of his car when he fired the gun. She didn’t see anyone but Venable fire a gun, she said.

Youngstown police said when they arrived about 6:30 p.m., Moore already had been taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he later died.
