Lighting of the Green set Friday

Setbacks push gazebo completion to January

CANFIELD — The Rotary Club of Canfield’s annual Lighting of the Green takes place Friday. While festivities will start on the Green, it won’t be using the gazebo, which remains under construction.

Earlier this year, Rotary took on the project to construct a gazebo that replaces the former one that had safety issues. The new gazebo will be slightly lower and larger with a handicap access. The Rotary is paying for the project. Had construction stayed on the original schedule, the gazebo would have been completed for the holiday lighting event.

The organization ran into some red tape in applying for the construction permits. The group obtained the permits but suffered a delay that meant it will not be done until January.

“We have a tentative date for the first of the year,” Anthony Nacarato, city councilman and Rotarian, said. “We still have some minor things to do yet, and we are trying to figure out the construction of a ramp to access the gazebo.”

He said the plans called for a natural earthen ramp that would permit a wheelchair to enter onto the gazebo floor. The access wouldn’t be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, but it would permit better access for a handicap individual.

“We are trying to figure out a natural grade that won’t take away from the look of the gazebo,” Nacarato said.

He did say the gazebo would have the construction fence removed and the muddy areas would have wood chips put down for the Friday event.

As for the lighting ceremony, set to start at 6:30 p.m., Parks Garden Center donated a 10-foot tree that will be placed directly across from the new gazebo.

According the city’ website, Santa Claus will arrive at 7 p.m. by horse-drawn carriage. He will be ushered into Canfield Township Hall, where he will greet children and get their Christmas lists.

At 7:30 p.m., a combined Hilltop / C.H. Campbell Elementary performance will take place at the Canfield Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St. A block away, the Canfield High School Choir will perform at the Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St.

Also open for tours will be the Mahoning Dispatch Museum and the War Veterans Museum, which will have trains running in the basement. Carriage rides will be available around the Village Green, and refreshments will be available at the Piccadilly Parlour Victorian Tea House across the Village Green from the churches.
