Businesswoman pleads guilty

Agreed to pay $81K restitution for theft

YOUNGSTOWN — Erica R. Stanton, 29, of South Raccoon Road, Canfield, and K.E.L. Management and Maintenance of Austintown, the company she and her husband ran, has pleaded guilty to grand theft.

Erica Stanton and K.E.L. agreed to pay $81,000 in restitution to the company Adler and Eagle of Cleveland Heights, but Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court last week did not sentence anyone to jail time.

The convictions are for Erica Stanton and K.E.L. misusing a credit card and other funds while she and her husband, Kenny Stanton, 57, of Raccoon Road in Canfield, were managing apartments in the Youngstown area for the company Adler and Eagle, prosecutors said.

Adler and Eagle gave a credit card to the Stantons to use in the management of apartments owned by Adler and Eagle in the Youngstown area, but Erica Stanton and K.E.L. “went beyond what they were supposed to” in using the credit card, said Martin Hume, county assistant prosecutor. They went over the amount they were supposed to spend by about $81,000, Hume said.

The defendants deposited $81,000 with the common pleas clerk of courts office for restitution prior to the sentencing hearing, Hume said.

Kenny Stanton was charged in the case, but charges against him were dismissed because the majority of the transactions were attributed to Erica Stanton, Hume said.

Kenny Stanton appeared in court also, and he entered a guilty plea on behalf of K.E.L. Management and Maintenance because he is the statutory agent for the company, Hume said.

Erica Stanton was placed on one year of community control, sometimes known as probation.
