Youngstown church to mark 100th anniversary

YOUNGSTOWN — Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 N. Brockway Ave., will celebrate 100 years as a congregation on Sunday.

The anniversary celebration begins with a worship and thanksgiving service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Waldermar Vinovskis, district president of the SELC Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, as guest preacher.

The theme for the celebration is “Pressing On, with Faith, Witness and Service.” A buffet luncheon will follow at noon at the Birch Hill Cabin (next to the Lily Pond) in Mill Creek Park.

Rev. Hosea J. Ekong, EM pastor, said Concordia was organized in the summer of 1922 as Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Andrew Hvizdak as the founding pastor.

Ekong said the church has undergone many changes in name and location and has survived significant demographic changes to the Slavic population in Youngstown over the decades.
