Seeking ID of second man in E. Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Police released dramatic video of the June 16 shooting of a man, 27, in John White Park on Kimmel Street on the East Side.

The park’s surveillance video shows a man in a white hat and white shorts pointing a gun at another man hiding in front of cars in the 5 p.m. incident. The victim is crouched behind one of the cars as the assailant fires repeatedly at the victim, who eventually runs away while hobbled by the hip wound.

The victim survived, police said.

The video also shows a second man near the first dressed in black also firing into the park. Another camera angle shows a pavilion in the park under which about a dozen adults and children were seen running away from the gunfire.

The victim shot in the hip can also be seen entering the frame as he runs past the pavilion.

Lt. Mohammad Awad with the police department’s detective division said some adults stayed behind to talk to police. He said, “We were completely shocked and appalled when we saw this video,” he said.

Police have identified one of the shooters as Michael Walker, 32, who is charged in Youngstown Municipal Court with felonious assault, a second-degree felony. Walker is not in custody, and police still want to identify the second shooter.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE or YPD at 330-746-8YPD. Tips may be left anonymously.
