HONORING VETERANS: The four Youngstown Catholic Diocese cemeteries will honor veterans with a memorial service at 10 a.m. today with the playing of the national anthem, presentation of colors, speaker, playing of Taps and a rifle salute. The service will take place at All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta, Calvary Cemetery in Massillon, Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown and Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown. There will be refreshments.

ORDINATION MASSES: The Rev. Paul Dominic Marich, O.P., 36, originally from Youngstown, was to be ordained to the Catholic priesthood for the Dominican Order.

In celebration of his ordination to the priesthood, there will be two Masses of Thanksgiving in Youngstown this weekend. Today, he will offer Mass at 5 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown. On Sunday, he will offer Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., Youngstown.

LABYRINTH WALK: The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, soon will begin its 12th year of labyrinth walks. While the labyrinth is open year-round, themed and guided labyrinth walks are offered by trained facilitators during the warm-weather season.

Each walk is led by a different facilitator, either an Ursuline Sister or associate, with the meditation centering on a related theme. This year’s theme is hospitality, which is a virtue central to the ministries of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, who began their work in the Mahoning Valley in 1874, and to the mission of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535.

All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to an hour.

This year’s schedule is 2 p.m. June 12: “Welcoming Jesus into our Hearts”; July 21, 6:30 p.m. “Knock…it shall be opened”; Aug. 18, 6:30 p.m. ”Jesus invites the children”; Sept. 15, 6:30 p.m. ”Jesus welcomes the sinners,” and Oct. 16, 2 p.m. “God welcomes us all.”

The labyrinth is open dawn to dusk. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for all physical abilities and offers ample parking.

MEET THE BISHOP: Jewish Christian Dialogue with Bishop David Bonnar will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Temple El Emeth, 8970 Logan Way, Liberty. The free presentation is sponsored by the Rev. FIRST FRIDAY CLUB: The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown Speaker Series will host the Rev. James Daprile of the Diocese of Youngstown. EVENT POSTPONED: Simple Gifts Interfaith Choir’s presentation of “Hearts Wide Open” originally scheduled this weekend at Hubbard First Presbyterian Church has been postponed. The 55-voice choir sings traditional, contemporary and gospel selections, with opportunities for the audience to sing along. The new date is undetermined at this time.

PASTORAL ANNIVERSARY: Friendship Baptist Church, 1954 Brier St. NE, Warren, will celebrate the ninth pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Avan M. Odom at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Guest preacher is the Rev. Vincent Peterson of Providence Baptist Church in Akron.

Odom in 2012 became the pastor-elect of the Friendship Baptist Church and in 2013 he was officially installed as the pastor.

Peterson was officially installed in 2007 as the pastor of the Providence Baptist Church.

INSTALLATION: First Baptist Church of Braceville, 1300 Cedar St. SW, is hosting the installation of its pastor, Rev. Fred L. Gilbert, at 1 p.m. today.

ORDINATION: The Rev. Paul Dominic Marich, O.P., 36, originally from Youngstown, will be ordained to the Catholic priesthood for the Dominican Order 9:30 a.m. May 21 at an ordination Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Most Rev. J. Augustine DiNoia, O.P., adjunct secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome and Titular Bishop of Oregon City, Oregon, will be the ordaining bishop for Brother Paul and his nine classmates.

Marich was born in Youngstown. He is a native son of St. Brendan Church and graduated from Ursuline High School in 2004, and received his bachelor of arts in political science and philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2008. Before entering the Dominican Order, Marich taught high school theology and social studies for five years at schools in Texas and Virginia.

Marich entered the novitiate for the Dominican Province of St. Joseph in 2017, and completed his theological studies at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2021. The Dominicans, formally known as the Order of Preachers, were founded in France by St. Dominic de Guzman in 1216. Dominicans have been in Youngstown since 1923, and they currently serve St. Dominic Church on the city’s South Side and the Newman Center at Youngstown State University. It was at St. Dominic where Marich first came into contact with the Dominicans when he was in high school.

He has been serving as a deacon at St. Patrick Parish in Columbus, and he will remain there as a parochial vicar after his ordination.

HONORING MOTHERS: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, the Youngstown Catholic Diocese will honor living and deceased mothers at the Diocesan cemeteries with flowers and a prayer card, and light refreshments. Staff will be available to answer any questions and give out maps of the cemeteries, as well as write up orders for work that needs done at families’ graves. The event will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, All Souls Cemetery in Cortland and Calvary Cemetery in Massillon.

CONCERT SET: General Assembly Church of God, 2021 E. River Road, Newton Falls, will host the Singing Weavers in concert 11 a.m. Sunday.

50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY: People’s Chapel Church of God, 2145 Hillman St., Youngstown, celebrated its 50th anniversary May 1. The theme was “Jubilation.”

GUEST VOCALIST: McKinley Community Church, 1524 Elm Road, Warren, will host Tia Ciferno, who will provide vocal music 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Ciferno also will speak about her involvement in the Bella Women’s Center in Warren, which helps women in pregnancy crisis.

Ciferno has been a Warren resident most of her life. She and her husband, Mike, have been married 42 years and raised their four children in Warren. For the past 25 years, she also has had the opportunity to share her original inspirational music in hundreds of churches and venues locally and in other states and countries.

MOTHER’S SUNDAY: Third Christian Church, 241 First St., Warren, will host Mother’s Day Sunday sponsored by Christian Men’s Fellowship. Guest speaker is the Rev. Neil Heller, associate minister of New Jerusalem Fellowship Church.
